4Runner cranks but won't start
#22
My 2002 4runner , 70k miles, would crank this am, but would not turn over. Sounded as if the starter wasn't engaging (as if no load on the starter). After a few tries it turned over. I cleaned the butterfly , which was dirty, and it's been starting. No codes. Everything is original. After the butterfly clean my idle rpms are staying at 1k instead 700. Any thoughts? New to the site...thanks.

Just got gas.. Shell, battery terminals good. Anyone know where the fuel pressure valve sits and expected pressure. Going to highway it now to see how it reacts and see if the idle goes back down to 700 at idle.

Mommas hauler.. Cleaned with rag soaked with tb cleaner. No spray. Still breaking it in! I blow it out every now and then. The no start sounded weird. Like the starter had no load. Can't see the fan from the drivers seat. Need longer arms.

I have replaced the CPS, but that had no effect. I have ordered a new ECM and should have it installed tomorrow. It's the last thing on the list that 98SR54RUNNER provided (harness checks OK too) so I'll let you know how that works out.

Any news on this shakeyjac? SAME exact thing happened to me several days ago. I assumed it was the fuel pump or filter, replaced both and same symptoms. I don't have a code scanner so I don't know what's going on with the computer, but hopefully your solution will help me also.

So, it just came unplugged? Glad to hear you found the problem. Even if it was facepalm worthy, sometimes it's those little things that are impossible to find. Good information for future troubleshooters.

Yeah, unfortunately my original (240,000mi) pump was dead completely dead. Thank god it happened just down the road from home instead of 500 miles away two weeks ago. After installing the new pump, it would still crank but not turn over, so I started with the trouble shooting, realized the pump was registering as an open circuit on the Ohm meter. Took everything apart plugged the pump in, started right up. I'm notorious for always forgetting to plug something in. DOH!

Final Fix: I replaced the ECM with the used one I got, but then the truck would start at all. So I put in the old one and took the truck to the dealer to see if they could reprogram the used ECM. They did diagnostics and found the original ECM to be working normally, so they checked the timing and said it was slightly off. I had them replace the timing belt (and water pump, etc.) and set the timing, and now all is well. Thanks everybody for the input!

So glad to hear you got it fixed after that laundry list of things you checked. Did you do timing belt work yourself before the problem or did the timing belt jump a tooth or something?
#32
No, I hadn't done anything with the belt, other than inspect it. I guess it jumped a tooth or two. I was planning on replacing it anyway, and after I read through the process I thought I'd just have someone else with better facilities handle it. It must have just been coincidence that it jumped while I was working on the other items; I think the throttle body is what stranded me in the first place. In the future I would recommend that anyone with similar issues work on the throttle body first!
