the front crossmember is actually a bit further back on the 2WD's, while the 4WD has the front crossmember up forward a bit more. Of course when there are running boards, its difficult to distinguish that.

I normally just look from the front and look for CVs.

are you sure? maybe there are differnt suspension setups, but i know that on the torsion bar equipped vehicles that the 4x4 tbars are longer than the 4x2 ones

Here in BC there a lot of 5spd 3gen runners, I got one. The local buy&sell always has some in it. Just the limiteds are pretty much all autos.

From: OmG, Hi2U !!! .... DANG, my chic's got some SEXY eyes.... among other things. WOOT WOOT !!
mine is a 98, has the 4wd emblem... custom added

from what I understand, the limiteds had 16 inch rims, so it is possible to have a 4wd w/ 15s

yes, I am positive, there are no torsion bars on 3rd gens, and I have a 2WD frame, and the crossmember is further back on 2WDs than on the 4WDs. Thats why I had to make a custom transmission mount for the 4WD tranny on my conversion...

97 Runner without 4X4 emblem fix

I wondered about the absence of a 4X4 emblem myself and so since I'm a signmaker and I cut vinyl graphics for a living, I just designed my own and installed them myself. See my avatar for the design I did. I'm also going to replace the decals with a handmade polished aluminum version soon.

Another V1.0 (1.0 being 96-98) 3rd Gen without a 4WD emblem. In fact, other than the CVs, the only way to tell it's a 4WD is to look and see the X-fer case.
