4runner 2002 engine upgrade
#2
Upgrade in what manner? More power presumably?
Probably the most obvious and 'factory approved' manner would be to install a TRD supercharger.
Getting into the hairy end of 'DIY wrenching' would involve a turbo. Or an engine swap to something a bit peppier, like a V8 of either Toyota/Lexus or domestic origin.

Depends on how much you find it for, they are all used now days so prices vary a LOT. Generally $1k-$2.5k though.
Honestly skip the supercharger, waste of money long term IMO. If you want more power do it right and go turbo. For about the same price you can get a running turbo setup that will make way better power and be much more flexible.
Far as engine swaps, there is no need IMO. The 5vz will do anything you want it to, the auto transmission is the first weak link you will run into.
