ok basicly i want you to post why you bought a 4runner or a pickup.
also some pros and cons . like for instance i bought my 4runner because i found a amazing deal on it and am gradually finding the highlights of owning a 4runner. like carrying 4people and storage space out of the rain( i live in oregon)

one of the biggest deciding factors of me getting the runner instead of the pickup is that everyone and their cousin would want you to haul their ˟˟˟˟ arround for free, you can also sleep in the back just by removing the rear head rests, and folding down the seats, if i were you look for a 1st gen, cheaper to work on, and they have a removable hard top, sides they have the best looking body style so far!

I bought mine because a pickup simply didn't have enpugh room and I like the wheelbase of the 1st gen not too long not too short
I like the removable top, and the ability to camp in it. (my girlfriend and I are relatively comfortable in it. I am 5'9" and she is 5'11"(she would like a little bit more room).

 

truck for my motorcycles, someday a kart. otherwise i'd be driving a car.

 

I sold my 98 Tacoma LTD TRD AUTO because it was an Auto and the x-cab seats were pointless.

I purchased my 4Runner for the 5-speed and extra room.

I am no longer asked to help people move with my truck or haul their crap around.

I really want a pre 85 w/ 4cyl 5spd, lockers and marlin dual case. Good milage, you can bounce it off rocks without being bummed your nice paint is ruined. I have always liked the 1st gen runner, removable top rocks, could rhino line the back...
Uh oh. starting to spend more imaginary money, Damn!

 

yeah same here i was looking for a 2nd gen 4runner or truck and found a 4runner that some little old lady had bought new, brought it to th toyota dealership for any problem all maintenence records,120,000 miles perfect interior and exteriort for only..........$5000

would the pickup be faster becuse of the lighter weight?

Of course. But the question is, how much of a difference is it? Probably not enough to notice.

 

my taco was used as a company truck mainly, for construction, but i carried way above the rated payload, and it still ran great. i carry a lot of steel and crap around plus i like having a toolbox for utility and repair purposes when offroading, nice thing about 4runner is the rack on top of the roofs for canoes etc. although i do have a fear of suv's and their reputation for being top heavy ever since my friends explorer barrel rolled on him

 

Anybody think it's a coincidence that a standard size twin mattress fits perfectly in the back of a 3rd gen without an inch to spare?

Does the Tacoma fit one also with the tailgate up?

I think they build boxes to accomodate specific lumber sizes.

My 1994 Dakota's box fit a 4x8 perfectly over the wells with the gate down. It lined up perfectly with the end of the gate. Plus it had notches cut into the bed so you could make platforms out of 2x4's They don't simply slap a box on the back of these anymore, I believe there is some thought to these matters. Especially nowadays with all these useless short boxes. Sorry, not a big fan of the quad cab.

 

When I bought my '85 4Runner almost 13yrs ago now, it was because I couldn't come up with an '85 extra cab 4x4 Toyota and 4Runners I could find.
The only real drawbacks on the 4Runner to me is the weight of the top and seats in the rear and the flipping electric rear window. Although, the extra weight does mean more weight on the wheels for better traction.
Obviously, you can get more in the pickup, but largely only if you keep the top on the 4Runner. If I had ever broken down and spent the $ for a canvas top on the 4Runner I would have likely packed even more stuff around in it then I did anyway. I've had sheetrock, shingles, tile, furniture, compressors, all sorts of stuff in it. Plus, it has the added nicety of when you are camping you can sleep in the back and have all your gear in the front and have it relatively at hand.
On an obscure note, if you have a pickup and kill the fuel pump you have to drop that gas tank to the ground. In a 1st gen 4Runner anyway, you can get to it from inside the truck and not even get your shoes dirty
That's about as much 2 cents as I feel like typing at the moment...
