Hey guys,

what's my top speed maximum travelling in 4 Wheel High range? 2000 4runner SR5 5 speed. I assumed it was 45 MPH, but I could be wrong. Lot's of snow in Boston now!

i think you should be able to go 60-65 MPH

 

Technically as fast as you want, you just can't shift into 4hi unless your going like 45 or slower (i think)

 

It depends on the shifter. On my previous 4Runners with the push-button, the manual said that you can safely shift to 4HI at 60MPH or below (or was it 62MPH?). On my Tacoma with the J-shifter, it says 40MPH or below. Regardless, I normally try to shift at 20MPH at the most. I have yet to run into an occasion where I had to shift to 4WD at anything over 20MPH. 99% of the time, I go into 4WD at 0 - 10MPH.

 

I think you are right ..62MPH...It should say in owner's manual.

 

so I finally found the correct section in the owners manual. On my 5 speed SR5, you have to be below 50 mph to put it in 4wd high range, and from first to 4th gear, there are recommended top speeds which also match what they recommend for regular 2-wheel drive max MPH. In other words, you can drive in 4-wheel high range just as you normally would as far as speed, but you have to be below 50 to get it into 4 WD High.

 

Why do you need to go so fast in 4wheel drive?
You desert racing?

 

If it is nasty enough that you need the 4wd then 45-50 mph is probably a good top end speed. Can you go faster? of course...

Should you? probably not.

traction is a fine line between control and lack of. Only takes a small stretch of ice to make you realize you crossed that line.

 

my taco stock will do the shift up to 62mph. if you disconnect the VSS-4X4ECU wire its not limited but thats not really recommended
you can go as fast as you want in 4x4, i had my truck at 75 in 4x4 last night, its just not the best thing in the world for your front diff or your tires but if you are on a non-traction surface it shouldnt hurt anything.

(PS its not recommended to go 75 on a non-traction surface, either )

 

Lets just say i know for a fact it will hit the fuel cut in 4wd. Forgot i had it in 4wd when "testing" after installing the supercharger....enough said.

And ya'll are right, it is 62mph that you have to be under before shifting into 4wd, in the limited models it will beep at you if you are going faster and try.

 

I have to keep my truck in 4wd all the time now since installing the supercharger. In 2wd i am just asking for trouble, in more ways then 1. Pleeing out of every stop sign and light is a sure way to get a cops attention.

Course i need to tires BAD, that would allow me to drive in 2wd again
