3vze engine, and 4 wheel drive
I have a 88 toyota pick up. And the engine is smoking and does not have any power. I don't know whether to put new rings in it or new engine.
And if i need to get a new engine where to find one. The 4 wheel drive is not ingaging or something. the shaft from the transfer case is spinning but the tires are not pulling. What to do?

If it is smoking and has no power, it may be rings or head problems. a re-build is in order, because it is only going to get worse. buying another engine will be cheaper, but if you rebuild yours, you can get another 200k easy out of your truck.
As for the 4WD:
If the shaft is spinning, but the wheels are not. Make sure the hubs are engaged. If manual, make sure they are fully turned to 4wd position. if automatic, put in 4wd and try to go forward and backward a few times to see if it engages. If neither works, it is prolly you hubs. you can switch to Aisen hubs fairly cheap, and yo won't have any more problems (they are manual hubs) also you can check out Warn manual hubs. This all can be fixed for about $130 if you do the work yourself.
Good Luck, and Welcome.

4wd...
Does he have the ADD like the rest of us?
If so, you may have a vacuum leak that is causing the shift actuators to not engage and therefore not engaging the differential. Or it could be the hubs like everyone else said.
BTW, Welcome.
