I painted both my chrome bumpers. I just used Rustoleum primer and semi-gloss black. Love the outcome.

Just lightly sand the chrome with 300 or so. Wipe clean with acetone or something similar, primer that thing up nice, wetsand, primer, wetsand and go at it with the black. I had one chip so far and its been probably 2 years.

NICE. Very well executed to. You sold me on it. I wanted to do this to match my TJM, but didn't want to mess with it with the possibility of it looking like crap. Now I just need some warm weather to be able to do the bumper and my tow hitch. How did you do it and what paint did you use?

Ok heres what I did.
#1 make certain you have all the paint, supplies, and tools you need.
You will need 2 cans of automotive sandable primer, 1 can of satin, semi gloss atuomotive or exterior paint, 300-350 grit sand paper, water supply, 12mm deep socket, 10mm deep socket, screw driver, little muscle.... etc I think thats it.

#2 loosen all the bolts and remove piece by piece. I tried removing the whole bumper but ended up doing a piece at a time. Choose a piece hose it down and start sanding ........ rinse - repeat. I sanded the chrome until my reflection was good and distorted in the still shiny silver.

#3 after you rinsed for the last time dry dry dry your bumper bits and lay them on cardboard or whatever you use for painting. Then apply your primer ever so gently until you know how your primer is going to hold. I've had it come out fast and then run on my project making me wait to sand it.

#4 after the 1st primed coat is dry and ready to sand (follow instructions on can) sand lightly removing any other imperfections and prime it again.

#5 my 1st paint coat gets dusted on so that I don't build up to much paint. I like to hit the corners round bits and so on. Then I spray the flat surface and wait some more. I put a total of 3 coats of satin paint on and was not impressed with the semi dry look but when all was said and done it looked good. I took the liberty of using rustoleum industrial gloss black to paint the inside of the bumper for a nice finished look because there was some rust and well I cleaned it and painted it too.

#6 the longer you can wait for the paint to harden the better here in FL it's warm so it dries fast and cures faster over night was sufficient.

Tada!

Now the tow hitch is another story I used spray on (canned) bedliner, it's my most favorite paint. I used it on my grill after my accident my wheel wells, my hitch, and my work surfaces in the garage because it seals the wood.

yep, It looks a lot better, I will have to do the same once my new bumper is on (still need to decide paint option for that... thinking POR-15 and HardNose or some other topcoat, not sure yet, maybe just satin/semi-black)

but, I would remove, or paint the part of the trim/flaps that cover the bumper, it looks goofy and I think it would be better black

I like my flaps and you don't have the limited style flaps or flares so your already black. And for all those that don't like my mud flaps you can bite my ass. I'll take them off when I break them off.

yep, I can see what you have, and I know what I have

Either way, your 4runner looks great, and much better with the black bumper. I wouldn't take the flaps off.
