What would it cost $1,100 to get rear brakes adjusted?!

 

I've seen the 3.4's go 400k, hell even my 3.slow lasted to 300k and all I did was change fluids and wheel it. The tranny started sliping and I traided it in. About the trash can thing, I had a kid who drove around my gated complex hitting peoples trash cans all the time. For some reason nobody ever said anything. He did it to me once, the next weekend I filled it with broken boxes of tile and hard thinset... ill put it this way, his ford ranger was still sitting in front of my house the next morning. And his airbag did deploy...

 

My 97 has close to 213,000 on it. The only parts other than maintanence I've had to replace has been front end parts from both accidents (that makes three total since the production line)

Buying a radiator and a condensor as we speak Hit and runs get expensive...

This all sounds very optimistic. My 2002 Tacoma is a very clean well maintained example and just turned 170,000miles and just had a complete cylinder head gasket failure dumping all it's coolant out the tail pipe. Middle cylinder on the right bank. I was flabergassed that this could happen to a "Toyota" but a little research and it seems more common than strange. So now I'm looking for a new engine. I'm finding lots of engines available. Every one claims they are low miles from buy back trucks with frame issues. I would have thought those engines would have gone to the crusher with the trucks? Any how What I'm wondering is . are all the 3.4l engines interchangeable or are there slight differences among different models that might make one fit my truck and one might not ? are they all the same ?

 

Know that during the 1st Tacoma / 3rd 4Runner Toyota had 3 setups of 3.4: 1996-1998, 1999-2000 and 2000-2002 (4Runner) 2000-2004 (Tacoma). I'm not sure how much did actual mechanical the engine changed, but wirings is different and ECMs ate different.

 

Thanks for the info . I'm finding there was a change Feb 99 and older and Mar 99 and newer for dipstick or no dipstick ? Other than that I haven't been able to confirm and differences with the later models or if there is differences from the 4 runner to the Tacoma. 2 wheel drive tacoma and 4x4 runner engines seem plentiful but 4x4 tacoma engines seem scarce and unusually expensive.
I don't want to pay $1200 for an engine when there are others out there for $450 that might be exactly the same . Thanks for any info

 

My 2001 4Runner has Dipstick.

I'm doing some research and found the same thing. 4Runners are cheaper then Tacoma for some reason (same year and comparable mileage).

 

I think someone can nurse pretty much any vehicle to a ton of miles. It all comes down to how much abuse (or negligence) one can take. For that, Honda and Toyota win. They require less maintenance to go very far. Neglect a BMW and within 100K the thing is used up.

That said, I am pretty sure these vehicles are bomb proof mechanically.

One thing is for sure, the interior bits will need replacing after about 200K. My seats were toast at 150K. My brake pedal rubber is gone for all intents and purposes. Foot rest has become unglued. My cup holder (older design) broke off at 130K.

Just find a good yard and pull those bits from a newer vehicle and move on with life. No payments = winsauce.

I have 2004 Tacoma. Same generation time with 207,000 from new york (salt) and my only problem has been the rust on it from the dang salt. Besides that it drives amazing. I will attest to the fact that Yotas last foreverish.

 

I have 265K on my '97 and it's not only my daily driver but my hunting/fishing/exploring truck too, and it drives fine. I've found that the 3rd gen is easy to work on and parts are readily available. Sure, little things will need to be replaced, repaired, and (once you get the wrenching bug) upgraded, but if i had a friend looking at buying one with high miles, I would have no problem recommending it as a solid, reliable vehicle that will never leave them stranded if they pay attention to it and fix things when needed.

Recently bought my sisters 99 4runner with 300k + miles on it. And it been great. She had it just parked collecting dust and it needs alot of work but it runs amazing and for the past year it's never let me down. I'm gonna start fixing it up. I just lifted it 3 inches and added some 275×55 and some 20s on it. It needs a new bumber and surrounding parts after a car accident my sister had that they never really worked on. I'm loving this truck and would really recommend anyone to buy one. Cheap to maintain and easy as hell to fix. Plus there's enough yota lovers out there that anytime you wanna work on your yota there's more than enough forums and YouTube videos to chose from, to get all the info you need.
