That's going to cost around $42,000 more in gas.

My '96 has about 235,000 on the clock. Only MAJOR repair it has had was the head replaced, it kept shooting spark plugs out and a heli didn't fix it and the hole was too big for a Timesert.

I've seen my fair share of engine failures but that is something I haven't seen yet. The though of it conjures up a cartoon where an engine spits out a plug saying "pah-tooey, how dare you try and put a cheap plug in me"

Red face

Having skipped over some posts and read others.

These vehicles are great I have way to many.

But if you don`t have a place and tools and the time if only a spot at your place outside. Much needed maintenance gets pushed off or sent to the closest place paying $$$$.

A starter or Alternator or belt could give up at anytime or a battery

I say these vehicles are reliable only because they are so simple to work on. Now I am keeping 4 up and running but if I looked at my parts bill and my time. I could easily have a new Toyota 4X4 every 3 to 5 years and save money

98,000 miles and going....on the 1998 factory installed TB/H20 combo.

This engine/truck is rather easy to work on, along with the 4.7L in the Tundra.

Speaking of popping plugs, try inserting a timesert into the infamous Ford 5.4L engine. It will make you run the gammit of four letter cuss words rather quickly....

I'll argue that point. My family has several vehicle I take care of. We have a 95 Caprice, 01 4Runner, 06 Jeep, 02 Ford Focus, 03 Durmax Chevy, and a 95 GMC 1500 diesel. All vehicles were bough new or with less than 35K miles on them.

That being said off all the above vehicles the 4runner has had the lowest rate of parts needing to be changed IE starters, alternators, fuel pumps, ball joints, cv joints ETC. In the 300K miles I've owned my 4runner the only parts that I had to replace due to failure were the power door lock motor and the power antenna.

The only intrusive work I've had to do is the timing belt and water pump at 125K and 250K and ball joints at 250K.

The other vehicles have already needed starters, alternators, fuel pumps, and A/C compressors, and they all have under 200K miles on them.

The 4runner is a well built very reliable vehicle. Yes its easy to work on but its also VERY well engineered and built with top quality parts with no corners cut with cheap parts.

Every day I marvel at how well my truck starts, drives, and looks. Purchased new in June 2001 with 2 miles on the clock, it now has 211,000+. I would not hesitate to hop in and drive it to CA tomorrow.

I maintain it religiously, but never hesitate to bury the go pedal when conditions warrant such behavior.

I'm impressed at the miles some of you ring up. But it seems like there is a huge difference when you own the vehicle for all or most of it's life and just buying some random vehicle with 200k miles on it. I've been looking and it seems like the retail prices are insane for 200k miles. It's easer to find a 1990 truck with less miles than it is a 3rd gen.

Tacos are even worse. The stupid buyback thing seems to have driven prices way UP on the older ones.

I think one of the reasons that you will see Toyota's with the higher miles is that a 10 year old 4Runner with 200,000 miles still has value and will be fixed by the owner rather then just donated for a tax credit like a 10 year old blazer with 200,000 miles. If you dont live in the rust belt I think they can go forever.

I have a 97 with the original 3.4 and tranny, just turned over to 306K. Runs fantastic. Just keep up regular maintenance.

LOL. Poor poor chrysler. If only they weren't so cheap. I see the old chargers and then i see the ones that are basically a chrysler 500 with a wing and I can't help but think, wtf happened.

(Which we shouldnt have been hitting in the first place but we were tipsy)So it really messed up the front end, destroyed the radiator and pretty much totalled the right side. So we drove it home with one headlight, and no radiator fluid. The airbags def deployed properly at the speed we were at, and how hard we hit the thing. But I was trying to make the point that ive never heard of a vehicle having airbags that didnt deploy in a accident that they were supposed to deploy. No matter the age of a car. So yes Maintenance is a good choice but you dont have to replace everything just cause the car is old. Its just not necessary. The airbag system is designed to last and to work when it is needed to. So its not gonna break easily.

Just make sure nothing is visibly wrong with it and you should be fine.

O also I just thought of something. Its against the law for car manufactures to install airbags that dont have Gold plated connections so they will never corrode no matter how long and how long they are exposed to moisture. Just something to think about also.

Dude this happens all the time. I'm about to finish up getting my EMT certs and that's one thing rescue personnel are definitely trained to be cautious for; air bags that didn't properly deploy.
I.E. you are sticking your head into a car trying to get to someone who just smashed their face against their windshield when BAM air bag deploys and breaks your neck. Better luck next time.

Yeah, I think its really just hit or miss with them. I got a buddy driving one of their vans into the 350000 range and it just keeps trekking along..and then my uncle has a durango that is a POS...

Just hit 266,000 in my 98 4Runner with a 5vzfe. Replaced the tps 250 miles ago and installed new brakes tonight. They needed it bad. Now off to saving for a tune up. woo-hoo.
