33 12.5 R15 BFG ATs
Hi
Someone has offered me a set of slightly used 33/12.5 R15 BFG ATs on steel "wolfrace" rims at a good price and I am very interested as they would be a great set of tires for some summer fun!
Now I've got a 50mm lift but can anyone envisage any other problems I may encounter before I shell out for them?

If you have the chance - throw one (if not 2) on the front and see what issues you might discover. with a 50mm (2inch) lift you might have clearance issues unless your willing to pull off the mud flaps and running boards (if you have them). But then again you might be okay. Your really going to want to check your clearance with the wheels turned full left and full right - it's going to be really tight, especially if the rims have less than stock backspacing...

Forgive my ignorance - how is 50mm in American? 5cm right? So I think that is about 2.5" which should be plenty for 33's as long as you pound in the fender seam.

Since you have more lift you don't need to do any fender trimming.

clearance might be an issue
with the 50mm(2") lift you should have no problem clearing the arch but your problem will be(may be?) with the width. The widest tire I've heard that fits with no trouble is 11.5" at 12.5" you will probably have a lot of rubbing when you try to turn unles those wolfface rims have less (more?) offset then stock. One other thing with that wide a tyre you may need to add fender flares, I don't know about UK but here in Canada some cops make a stink about uncovered tires because of the hazard to others from mud/stones/etc. being thrown off the tyre. check your regulations on this...Cheers Aviator

Oh I've got flares - about 3" wider than the body - they came standard with the UK 4Runner. They are made of fibreglass though and therefore do not "bend"! Found that out last week reversing round a tricky track.

Jeremy how hard would it be to get some of those to me here in the States? We have an aftermarket company that makes very similar flares but they rquire the removal of the stock rear mudflaps. I think the factory look is much better integrated. Dunno how much of a junk yard rat you are but you could start a good little business importing pieces like those that never saw installation in our market.

You are dead right! But first I need some for myself and 4Runner fender flares are rarer than rocking horse ˟˟˟˟˟! They are also very few runners in scrap yards - they are just too rare a vehicle in the UK. (Saying that though - they are quite cheap secondhand) There are alot of Surfs though - mainly direct Japanese imports - but I suspect alot have their clocks wound back - but they do come with all the lux trim you require: aircon, flares, running boards etc. Check ebay.co.uk.
I checked with Toyota and 1 (one) OSR replacement fender flare is over £250! So I was going to ask you about Bushwackers!

Hehe. I see you guys with your factory flares, inclinometers, etc. Inclinometers are averaging $100-$150 USD on Ebay here.
I wonder if JD in Australia can hook us up with some deals.

Unless they rub driveline components - you really want the tire/wheel IN as far as possible. As the tire moves further out on the hub the sweep of the inner edge of the tire comes closer and closer to the rear/inner edge of the fender. THAT is where you are likely to have the clearance issues - especially when you've got mud flaps/fender flares/running boards all overlapping and taking up space!!
I'm speaking from experience, but you've got a little more lift than I do. Do your self a favor and do a test fit.

Good point. I'm not familiar with those wheels and their backspacing. He has a lot of lift compared to that one guy I linked to. At worst a 1" body lift may help a little too. I think those tires will be great for the type of long range roaming Bunda does.

Anyway - Inclinometers are for sissys! But flares fit wider wheels and they look good. Thanks for all your comments and but I've decided not to get them - I'll save my money and put it towards some new track rod ends and the NEW set of 265/75 ATs I (also) want!

I would just hate to anyone spend the money and then find a surprise they could have avoided. I bought a set of used 33's (worn enough to measure closer to a typical 32) put them on 8inch rims with backspacing less than a eighth of an inch smaller than stock and they rubbed real bad even with an extra 1.5 inches cranked on the torsion bars! I "had" to trim the inner edges of my fenders and pound down the pinch seem. I didn't realize until after I mounted everything up (by which time it was too late to return my wheels) that I had room to run almost an inch more backspacing - that may not be the case on a runner but worth checking out. That inch would have made a huge difference in the rubbage.

hey, If you're not going with the 33"/12.5s why not look at a set of 31/10.5 or 32/11.5 they'll fill the arch nicly and look a lot better than the little 265s which (i think) look too small on these trucks. by the way is the hilux also a rare bird in the UK? Cheers Aviator

Bean - no offence was meant and so none was taken! Just pulling your leg that's all! I mean I met Joey UKMyers and I felt just ancient next to him and it set me thinking that a lot of you guys are students etc and that puts me in the "crinkly zone"!

I plan to do 33's for my next set. Looking to do 1" BL in addition to my current setup - slightly cranked stock tbars and PP coils. I might go to the Downey coils for a bit more altitude. I think all I'll need to do is pound the fender seam (hopefully)

Backspacing is key.
If those rims are 15x10's, then I don't think it will work. If they are 15x8's, with around 4" of backspacing, you ought to be fine.
I have a little over an inch of front lift from a body lift and run 33's with only fender seam hammering. Cranking the torsion bars only allows clearance at ride height. When the suspension compresses, the lift is gone.
