305/70/16 4-Runner?
Ok,
I need to know who has tried the 305/70/16's on an '02 body with a 3" Daystar kit. I've read a few posts and have decided that I may try it with a 15x8 [EDIT..16X8] with a 4" backspace........I think it will work because it's only 1.25" taller and 1.5" wider than the stockers. I'm pretty sure it will clear the control arm but not sure about the fender & bumper.
This is my next project and the lift is sitting here in the floor beside the computer so deciding what tire and wheel combo to go with is the only thing holding me up here. BFG T/A Ko's for sure.
Give me the good and the bad...Who's tried it, and did it work or not?
Thanks in advance!

As a rule of thumb, I have always learned that for every inch of lift you should be able to go up a tire size in the same series . I know this rule will not work on all! But the 305/70's are a bit shorter than say a 75 series.
Who knows?
I'd like to get some feedback from a few that have tried this size tire no-matter what the lift and see how much room they have in the wells. Your info is appreciated, thanks for the reply.

I am running the Trd Tundra setup with 1" BL and 285's. I am about to mount either some 255/85/16 or I am looking at a set of 34X10.5X16 swamper LTBs. The BL is a must to do any off-roading with a 285.

he's running 315/70-17's IIRC
305/70-16's are 33x12.2
285/75-16's are 33x11.2
I'll be replacing my MT/R's w/ some of the same in either 285's or 305's later this spring whenever Goodyear decides to offer a good deal on them.

bamachem,
How do you think the 305's will do v/s the 285's. Will they clear? How much clearance do you have now? This vehicle will not see any extreme wheeling. I think they will work..........

I'm running 305/70/R16's on 16x8 rims with 4" backspacing. I have almost 3" of suspension lift and 2" of body lift. I did have a 1" body lift but had some front tire rubbing when off roading with the swaybar disconnected. I haven't had a chance to wheel with the 2" body lift yet to see if there is still some rubbing.
You do need the lesser backspacing and wider rim to bring the tires away from the upper A-arms

The Dueler M/T's were great, but were 265/75's. I traded those to Brian on my OEM wheels when he was going back to stock and I got his steelies and his 285 MT/R's. I then traded the 5 steelies for the 4 LX450 Alloys that I have now. I picked up a 5th LX wheel and had the 5th MT/R mounted on it so now I have a full set w/ matching spare and wheel.
My LX wheels are 4.25" BS and would probally clear the 305's. I have plenty of room w/ the 285's. I have a 2" SUS Lift and a 1" BL and haven't done ANY pinch weld pounding at all and I just barely rub on a compression. I'll pound away one day when I rotate the tires and the rubbing will be gone. 305's should work fine once I do that. The MT/R's I have now have about 30k or more on them, and still have close to a 1/2" of tread left. I can get a new set for about $700, then sell the used set for $300-$400 on ebay, thereby getting new tread for cheap. I have to replace tires more often this way, but I also have better tread all the time. As far as money goes, it's about a wash, so for the same amount per mile, why not just have new tread every year instead of running an additional year with slicks and still be out of pocket for the same amount???

TStango,
What wheel and tire combo are you using? Backspacing? If you used em off road with a 1" BL and the 3" SL, I still may try it with a BFG A/T to get the stance I want with the 3"SL.
My whole point of this thread is that the 305's are only 3/4" wider than the 285's. I still think I'm gonna try em unless someone can actually say "Tried it-Didn't Work" If anybody has tried it, let me know.
BTW....Can anyone that has any 3" lift tell me how much clearance they still have with the common 285's? Stock wheels or aftermarket.
Your information is greatly appreciated.................Thanks!

Funny you guys have no rubbing, Im running Revtek 3" up front, downey 3.5" in the rear. And I have the 2" body lift from Roger Brown/ 4crawler. I have the BFG 305/70/16 TA kos on some Weld 16x10" rims. I needed to chop up the lower valance, and do the pinch weld smash. I still rub, once in a while, and the odd thing is that it only rubs on the passanger side, when I have artciulation, and the wheel it turned. Let me know what you guys did to kill the rubbing.

I fit 305s with 2.5 lift thanks to ome and 2 body lift rb. i am going with a 315/75 at next tire. I am running 305 mt/r's. I would get a 1 inche body lift. then you dont have anything to worry about.

another note on the rubbing, it took some very "spirited" driving down "trail 1" at tellico to get it to rub there.
you may be experiencing that due to your wheels off-set.
for the question at hand though, it has been said many times that "to run 305's you have to do the same amount of work as 315's". i would agree with this. the problem is definitely the width not the height. with anything close to stock backspacing you will have severe rubbing on the upper control arms. i would say that 4" backspacing would be the absolute highest amount that you may be able to run without replacing your upper control arms or running wheel spacers.
