I give Yotatech a lot of credit for helping me keep my 4runner runnning.

Most of the work I've done on it is preventive maintanence. Most of that info and insight came from members of this website.

For example, my rear axle seal was leaking. While I had the axle out of the vehicle I replaced the rear wheel bearings, inner, outer seals, collars, brakes, etc. On an ABS axle it's a big job. But that rear axle is good for another 300K.

The parts alone were over $400, I can't imagine the cost if a dealer had done the work. That's just one example and it's why most vehicles do not receive proper maintenance.......because it is so expensive. Deferred maintenance kills.

I got almost 300k on mine, and it has been wheeled/abused beyond comprehension, it too leaks oil and has for years... but... If u get under it and look, you will see there is absolutely no rust under it... so I spend a couple bux a month on a quart of oil, and it keeps my rig from rotting. When it gets really bad...say a qut for 1k miles or less, I will fix it, till then, its just some preventative maintenance every time I drive!

You think the parts are expensive in the US, try buying them here in Canada! I can honestly say, it's probably double what you paid! Shipping is what kills us, not many Canadian Suppliers for parts, and everything I've priced out from the dealer here, is double what you guys say you paid!

With a standard tranny its so easy why not do it. And use a quality 80-90w GL5.

I'm at 217,000 one-owner miles and expect to reach 300k without a hitch. My maintenance protocol seems to echo that of Potomacduck.

Do these trucks require any special antifreeze/coolant, or is the generic green OK?

The new Prestone "mix with any" coolant shouldn't technically hurt anything. However, for the same price, call you local NAPA and have them order you some of this:

http://www.amazon.com/Zerex-675130-V.../dp/B0033QO022

(don't pay the ridiculous $17/gal that it is on Amazon)

I just picked up 6 gals, and it was only $11 per. It's phosphated HOAT technology, just like the Toyota OEM stuff. My local Toyota guru says only to use OEM or this stuff.....and he's been working Toyota's for 30 years.

I'm at only 165k on my '99 and outside of normal maintenance items I've only replaced a spark coil, starter and had my rear seal fixed but if I ever get to 300k miles it'll be in about 18-20 years since I don't rack up that many miles anymore per year like I used to.
