My 3.0 has 287,000 miles on it and is going strong. I'd say this was a good engine.

Also keep in mind the Toyotas we got then were sold in other parts of the world where speed wasn't such an issue.

Frank...what year and model Toy? I've always kinda thought that Toy finally got the headgasket problem fixed (with some exceptions) by about 95.

I don't think mine is really slow it just takes time to wind it out. It picks up power at about 3000 rpm.

I'm with you...The torque comes on low, so I generally shift at low RPM's. And when I do rev it, I shift at 4500. RPM's above that are an excercise in futility for this engine.

And I've always wondered...How do the guys drive that have thrown a rod in the 3.0?

Mine is an '89. It did go back for the recall many years ago.

Bitch Bitch Bitch. Hehe. Dude all I gotta say is that the 22r is the best engine ever made. What other truck do you still see with its original motor from 1985 that still running strong? Maybe under powered but man that engine could offroad. I miss my 87 4x4 dearly. That baby could offroad anywhere while everyone else got stuck and hammered.

Then some a-hole stole it, striped it down and set it on fire. They stripped it so bad they took the rubber moldings on the door jam. Damn those bastards will burn in hell.

Replaced her with a 97 4runner. Great car but not like my 87 4x4. Tear.....

Agreed.
I had a '93 2wd that was the vehicle I'd take out into the desert, through arroyos, around the volcanoes. It was so light, when I got stuck, I'd just get out and unstick it myself with a little push or a pull.

Loved that truck.

I dunno if your rigs feel completely bogged down but I was watching this documentary on new hybrid cars and they interviewed a toyota guy. He was describing how people were worried about lack of power in hybrids and how Americans always want an excessive amount of power and 90% of them never use it, thus wasteing gas. I dont remember exactly but he was saying how toyota does feel a slight need to compete with other companies but they also just suply enough power to move their cars, and then some.

I've never had too many extreme power problems in my 22RE other than just going up some long hills on highways and stuff like that.

Also I was checking out a 88 Nissan Z Turbo which has a 3.0 V6 Turbo and 210 hp, while my buddy has a new EVO and has 273 or 287, one of those, and thats a 2.0 Turbo 4cyl. Granted it is intercooled and the Z isnt, TIMES HAVE CHANGED.

What is the design flaw that makes this motor such a un-economical dog?

YES!

And in the last 10 years or so, they have made huge gains in power, economy, and emissions. Motors have come a long way since the early 1970s when gas shortages and emissions laws took the power away from us.

3.Slow

Ok, I just had to chime in on this one. I think everbody out there in Yotaville knows by now that the 3.Slow is the Bastard Step Child of Toyota engines. You find that out when you go to look for aftermarket parts for the thing and you definitely find out that it is when the only thing that TRD offers for it is an oil cap and stickers. Toyota has a few purposes in mind when they build your car, quality, dependability and the fact that you can drive the Livin' Crap out of the thing and it will still run tommorow and also the fact that you'll probably buy another one a beat the Livin' Piiiissss out of it too. Just remember the Golden Rule, "If a Man can make it, Another Man can Modify it.

My thoughts...

It was, after all, Toyota's first V6.

Considering it goes 200,000+ miles without major problems (assuming proper maintenance) seems like it's more than a piece of crap.

Sure it's slow, but I'm not driving a 4Runner to drag anyone. I hate the mileage aspect, but the issue of fast takeoff doesn't matter at all to me.

Meh.

I don't know about you, but I consider a blown headgasket a major problem.

It's gotta be restricted in air & gas. I CAN'T rev this thing past 4k rpm (I have the original '88). 2.7k - 3.5k is where all the power comes in. Below and above that, it's futile. And I drive in the mountains all the time, so the flat grounders might not feel it, but up here, the altitude and inclines kill this thing. Sometimes I wish I had the 22re turbo (turbos do SOOO well at altitude

I think I've taken care of most of it's "problems", and the power mine has is up there with a stock 3.4, I dare say. Single OverHead Cam -SOHC- engines, such as the 3.0, will (almost) always be inferior to Dual OverHead Cam -DOHC- engines, such as the 3.4.

It was the truck's first V6, and Toyota didn't do that bad of a job considering you take care of the exhaust problems.

I was including the headgasket recall, after which the 3VZ-E seemed to have no problems, inside the category of proper maintenance.
