3.4L conversion to 1st gen 4Runner?

Has anyone ever installed the Toyota 3.4L V6 in a first generation 4Runner? If so, what is involved? I currently have a 1989 4Runner V6 automatic that needs a new engine. the 3VZE is lacking.

It has been done... I will see if I can find the writeup for it.

You can also put a Ford 5.0l in if you want tire screaming kind of power.
302 in a 4Runner

I agree with Mack, get a Ford 5.0. Unless you have a 3.4l lying around, I bet you could buy a whole donor vehicle (for example, a late 80s early 90s running Mustang with all the electronics, etc.) for less than you could get a 3.4l. THey are expensive, even used from a junk yard. Its been stated before, but I'll say it again. If you are going to try and do some type of conversion like this, it is better to get a whole donor vehicle that to keep searching junk yards for certain parts, usually cheaper too.

Good Luck!

Mack, I was looking all over for the article over there.
It's not in the regular tech section I guess.
Looks like it was in the projects section.

John has put a Ford 5.0 engine into his 2nd gen 4Runner.
Here is the link.

Just stumbled across a totalled 2000

I found a totalled 2000 4Runner with 32000 miles on it. The 3.4, auto tranny and transfer case are available. If I can get a good deal, is this virtually a bolt in for the 2nd Gen? I'm guessing I'll need the wiring harness and the ECU too. Anything else?
