Question 3.4 ?

First I would like to say hey. I'm new to yotatech, but have been checking out this site for a while now and it seems very helpful to say the least, which is rare in most forums. Now to my question. I'm considering the 3.4 swap into a 90ish 4runner. I've done the searches and I've read the posts and checked the links, but my question is, has anyone swapped a 3.4 2wheel drive auto engine into a 4wheel drive 5spd 4runner or truck using the manual trans and a 3.4 4X4 ecu and harness? I've read that to save the headache to not do this, but if you got the 3.4 from a 97 yota and a wiring harness and ecu from another 97 yota 4wheel drive 5spd, would that not work? I'm sorry if this has been asked and answered already, but I didn't read anything about it other than its a headache. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for your time
Huck

Welcome. It sould like it would work, but I'm not to sure. I guess we will just have to wait for a 3.4 swap guru to catch this thread and give you an answer.

The reason I ask this question is because I can't find the 3.4 complete swap from a manual trans. 4wheel drive anywhere for a reasonable price. All I can find are the longblocks. So if I'm only getting a longblock to begin with, why not a 2wheel drive longblock(which I have found to be cheaper) and then just find the 4wheel drive ecu and harness somewhere else.

Thanks
Huck

Your issues will be (depending if you have a lift of not) the oil pan on the 4WD is different from the 2WD. Stock suspension the front diff will hit the 2WD pan. So, you will need the pickup and pan from a 4WD.

As far as using a 4wd harness I dont see a problem. If you are useing the 90ish drivetrain you will need to cut a few of the sensor connectors and wire in the existing plugs. I have heard that some of the 5VZ-FE auto engines didnt have the crank bored out for the pilot bearring. Dont know where but I remember where I read that though.

The swap istself is easy, getting the little check engine light to go out is the hard part
