3.0 automatic to 5speed conversion? Anyone know of a write up?
Ive been searching for the last 15 minutes for a write up or any information on swapping my auto trans with a 5 speed.. I know where there is a 1991 runner that got side swiped and Im sure I could pick up all of the parts if not the entire truck for a few hundred.. Does anyone know of a write up or at least a run down of everything that has to be changed to put a 5 speed trans in my truck? Im assuming the flywheel would have to be changed, Im not sure about the transfer case...

the auto trans you have is an A340H the transfer case is built on the back of it. its a 1 piece deal.
so youll need both the 5speed trans and its transfer case.
Youll need the clutch pedal, master cylinder/slave, flywheel, you might have to change out something with the spedo cable as the pickup end is diffrent (i think)
some interor peices perhaps depending on how nice you want it to look.
i dont know about the overall lenght of the 2 diffrent setups, if there might be a driveshaft that doesnt work...

You will also need the engine wiring harness, parts of the firewall harness and the dash harness, and the ECM. Never seen a write up but there have been guys who've done it. It's a fairly involved deal.

why? last time i saw this mentioned i though they said you could just disconect the auto because the shifting was all done by a second computer. so the ECM didnt care if there wasnt an auto there anymore.

Dunno, I've just read about a hundred times where people say you need some of the harnesses and the ECM. Maybe the engine ecm is looking for some info from the trans ecm and will throw the ck engine light. Maybe I'm delirious from laughter over the "nice paint" thread...

I am just about finished with my swap. I used the wiring harness and ecm from the donor vehicle though so I haven't had any problems there. I did have to buy a new driveshaft (FYI I found out that the bolt pattern on the driveshaft from 88 to 89-92 is different so I had to swap those too). Most likely have to make some modifications for the shift levers to fit as well, but thats not too big of a deal. I am just finishing up some work on the dash and then I should be off and running.

ya the 88 could give a crap less if anything is hooked up to the ecm as far as the tranny, its not gonna shoot a code, and will run fine. Other than that its just what the other guys said

The auto rear driveshaft on mine was 2 inches shorter than the manual's. Front was the same. Pretty simple swap but I haven't fired it up yet cause I'm gonna put a 3.4 in too. Everything goes in fine, even reused my old crossmember. Had to cut the floor wider.
