2nd Gen Cruise Control
Here is a strange one: My cruise control light went on the other day and I turned it off. Today I tried to use the cruise control and it didn't work. No light, nothing. I'm a little confused by this. It's a 95 SR5 with 145k. Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

I tried to use cruise control on my 3.slow like the first month I had it going to Atlanta... Im never going to use it again. It downshifts every little hill you get to. Now I just gain all the speed I need before the hill. By the way, cruise control also is bad on gas cause of the downshifting. I used like a half a tank and this was about 90 miles highway.

You guys have no idea how helpful cruise is when you have a 5 speed and you drive highways constantly. This year alone I drove from Pennsylvania to texas and then back (1600 each way), approximately 15 200 mile trips. I just got to DC to visit family from Pennsylvania, another 4 hours. Approximately... 7000 miles of highway this year and that, at 70 miles an hour is 100 hours of driving. 100 hours of highway driving without cruise? I laugh at the thought... instead of sitting in 5th holding my nuts and the accelerator I just sit back, smoke a cig and listen to music and just control the acceleration, braking and speed with my hands.

I have used cruise on long trips...1000 miles each way. And lots of shorter, say, 600 miles round trips. It's handy, but I can't STAND how often it downshifts. It's very annoying...but going on long flat stretches it OK. Hills? I often won't use it...

I luv cruise in my '94
I have a 5spd and run a lot of highway, cruise is on a lot of the time.
Mine quit on me at one point too. It was the little brain up on the drivers fender that quit (don't remember what it was called.)
If I remember correctly the computer picked up a code on it too.
Do you know how to extract codes?

When I fist got my runner I was extremely displeased with the performance of the cruise control - kicking down on the slightest inclines. Of course, it doesn't help that I do most of my driving above 5,000 ft. The 3vze can't breathe in the first place, and we won't mention how much of an engineering faux pas the stock exhaust cross over is. After modifying my intake and exhaust, my cruise control actually works pretty well. It doesn't kick down nearly as often as it used to.
I used to avoid using it because I'd get pissed when it would kick down. I use it all the time now and without the incessant downshifting I've become a much happier person. Animals and small children are not as afraid of me as they used to be.

It should throw a code so you can try to figure it out from that.
The CC does keep you on your toes, you gotta turn it off when your speed gets to down to 60 mph, otherwise the engine will race. Cruise comes in handy out here in CA.

When I purchased my 88 runner from my sister, she said one of the problems was her brake light was on all the time. I figured, surely her husband would have checked the brake fluid. On the way home I tried using the cruise control & it didn't work. I called her about it, and she said she hadn't used it for a while. I wondered if the brake light might have something to do w/ the cruise control, so I checked the brake fluid. It was a little low, so I added some brake fluid & the light brake light went off. Sure enough, the cruise contol worked after that.

c/c works good on 5 speeds. auto and 5 speeds have a c/c computer that can and will go out.lots of variables can stop c/c from working, brake switch, clutch, various lights;and or conditions, vacuum leaks,a/c on or off,abs problems.you name it.check every thing.
