2nd Gen Brake Light Out, Motor Broken
Posted for a friend: "I have a brake light out. To remove the lens to get at the bulb you obviously need to open the tailgate. Mine won't open because the window won't go down.Toyota wants $500 dollars to replace the window motor. Anyone have a cheaper idea outside of breaking the window? Thanks in advance...Joe"

bang on the tailgate with your hand in hopes of free'ing up the motor. it may go down then. otherwise hop in the back with a phillips screwdriver, flat head screwdriver, set of metric sockets, ratch, extension bar, and flash light. Take the covers off, then unbolt the motor. I want to imagine the motor, rugulator and window will all slide down still in the slides. then you should be able to open the gate and access the tail light bolts. Try it, hope it works but cant remember if that idea will work.

"thanks for the reply to my question and the link you sent.I have
the access panel off and have been oiling the motor all week trying to
unfreeze it.No luck just a click when I try to open or close.Do you
think I can get the window back up once I take the motor out?I just want to
fix that brake bulb to pass inspection or before a cop stops me and
don't care if the window works again. Thanks again...Joe"

He tried both key and switch, so it couldn't be the window lock. (I've been there before.)
I'll see if he changed the fuse. thanks yoterman

The great thing about the 2nd gen windows, they all have the same motor.
I got a used one for $10, replacing it was as easy as opening up the tailgate cover, unclipping a wire connection, removing 3 screws, replace motor, replece 3 screws, connect wire, replace cover, done. Took 15 minutes.
A passenger side motor will have to be clocked 180' so then up will be down on the switch and vice versa.
Any more questions?
