255/85R16 fitting under without hitch?

So I've recently upgraded to some MT255/85R16 on my 2001 4Runner. Look great, drive nice, little rubbing but nothing bad. Only problem is my spare. Sure looks cool on the roof rack but kills my storage. I know it doesn't fit under with the hitch installed, but wondering if it will fit if I remove the hitch. In the long run I'll be getting a rear "real" rear bumper with a tire swing out. But in the mean time I'd like to regain that storage. It doesn't fit vertical inside due to my drawer system.

I tried to measure it but between laying on my back and trying to hold the tape by my self I'm not totally positive. Figured I'd ask around before I just try it.

Alot of it might depend on the actual outside diameter of the tires, and the hitch you have on your 4Runner. What tires did you purchase? Is your hitch the factory option, or is it an aftermarket hitch? Is the difficulty with the tire fitting between the framerails, or is it the distance from the center of where the spare mounts up to the crossbar on the hitch?

I am looking at getting some 255's for my next set of tires, and would like to see pictures of yours if you get the chance. I will go down and measure mine in just a little bit and see what we can come up with.

interested as well-if it is a 33" equivalent it is likely going to be really tight-check exhaust clearance also.

depending on treaddepth and so on you might be pushing it.

Curious what brand you are considering that makes a 255/85? I am months away from buying but starting to shop now.

I've got a 32" spare under my 01, with a Hidden Hitch curved hitch. With the tire at regular pressure it is jammed tight between the hitch and the panhard bar, so I store it with only 10 psi. A 33 might fit jam in there, but only if it was deflated as well.

If my hitch was removed a 33 would fit no problem.

I am running Cooper ST's on my 03 Taco DC, and my measurements indicate that its not happening. 255/85/16's, or at least mine, are over 33", so I am debating on the best solution too.
