After hearing many people breifly describe how to do their own deckplate style mods for the 22RE I would like to know what has worked best and how to do these. There is no detailed writeups (that I have seen) with pictures and if people could start spreading their knowledge It would be awesome!

its really not that hard at all. all i did on mine was unscrew the retaining belt on the air duct attached to the airbox, remove the top of the airbox (as if changing filter), take filter out, unbolt the 4 retaining bolts, pull the airbox out. then the intake hose that comes from behind the headlight has a rivot that attaches it to the airbox, i took a drill bit and drilled that out. at this point you have no intake hose from behind the headlight leading into the box. that hole that is now open is the hole that i use for bringing air into the box. i also took the elbow out from the inside. that as well has a rivot on the inside that i drilled out. so now, no intake hose, no elbow on the inside. what i did next was on the bottom of my airbox there are little squares that the dirt is collected in. i drilled a hole in each box that way if water gets in the box, it falls out the holes. make sure if you drill holes you get all the excess plastic out of the box so it doesn't get sucked into the air duct. then you just bolt the airbox back in, i put a drop in k&n filter in, reattach the air duct, and put the top back on and that was it. 20 min. top. if you need any pictures of what i did, i'll be more than happy to get some for you. let me know. good luck! btw, as of right now i don't have the deckplate in, still looking for a smaller one. the marina only had LARGE deckplates, bigger than the airbox itself. but to do the deckplate, its the same steps as in the others that put the deckplate in. im not to concerned right now since im not jumpin into streams or anything right now.

 

Eway and I have the exact same setup (gave him tips on what to do). I have been running that setup for about a year now, and it works fine.

I have taken the mod a bit more extreme than he did since I don't do water crossings. Where the hole is left from the elbow / S pipe, I cut out that whole corner. Leaving a 4" x 4" square opening. I have also gotten rid of the stock air tube that runs from the AFM to the TB, replaced it with a piece of 2.5" hi-temp semi-flex hose, that I use here at work.

Do us a favor and post up a pic of your stock set-up and I will put one up of my modified setup , and maybe Eway can put his as another version and we can get a tech write up going.

This is what I did on my '92. The elbow has been removed(not in this pic) also but I left all the mounting tabs intack.

 

unbolted the box, removing the 3 bolts holding it in. you can see the bolts, 2 ontop, 1 on the bottom

 

then after i pulled the box and elbow out, there were 2 rivots, one holding the elbow onto the airbox, and 1 inside holding a little elbow thingy. i just drilled those two rivots out, removed both elbows, then drilled a bunch of little holes on the bottom to allow water that i might have sucked in to drain.

 

then i just put a K&N filter in, left the hole where the elbow was, open for the intake, rebolted the box in, and put the top back on. right now i don't have the deckplate in, can't find one small enough, but once i do, i'll drill another hole on the same face as the original hole, or i'll enlarge my single hole for a larger intake. thats the steps i took, took all but 20 minutes.

 

Yea my box is way different It looks. I dont have that 2nd pipe running parallel to the airflow sensor to TB tube. My filter just drops in. I am worried that those little holes may let water in if you get that high, and it would be bad. I have that elbow going out of the box and may just find a deckplate style thing and cut a big hole and se how it does. Not sure yet, any other idea's on my style box?

You have the same box, just it's missing the second elbow. You can see where it used to attach at the bottom in your 3rd pic. Just remove the s-tube and see if you like it or get some results. Then go futher if you want.

Why is the inside of the engine bay wet in your pics? did you clean it or over-heat. The former I hope.

Yea It rained all day here but I sprayed the mud off my truck and misted the engine compartment. Doubt it did anything but o well.

Ya i'll deffinetly remove the elbow. Should be fine for now but I don't have a K&N yet so hopefully it'll make some difference.

I hear all the emissions stuff on the 89+ drop the hp down to 103 from 116. Maybe you guys should get rid of it all some how and see how it does?

I opted for cutting the elbow and "Swiss-Cheesing" two sides of the lower air box. I get the air, the sound, and NO WATER......FREE!

 

right now im not planning on doing any high water crossing. if i ever get that kind of bug, i'll have a snorkle and a different airbox.
