22r build question
My current 22r in my yota is tierd and im looking at possibly building one up or maybe looking at a supra swap.. but time is an issue since it's my work truck and i need it to make my money..
Are there any 16v sohc or dohc heads available for the 22r? or any that will mate up for a hybrid build? 8 valves is just sad ....

unfortunately there aren't any DOHC heads for our little motors shame, since something like that would give it a lot of extra kick...
might wanna try getting a 22R to build, setting that up and just pulling your current engine and swapping that in to avoid downtime...

i have a std so maybe its something ill look into... any more info or a link would be really helpfull... if im going to rebuild why not go with something that would give me a some extra power!
now is there aftermarket support for the 20r like the 22r? it seams you can pick up a cam and valves/springs for the 22r for very resonable prices... just trying to get the best bang for the buck!

a way to think of it, is that a 20R is exactly the same(compatible) as the 1981 and 1982 22R with the exception of the head and intake manifold being different, and having a larger bore. the other early 22R engines('83-84) had a single timing chain and possibly a different timing cover, but the head should still work. late 22R engines have a taller block and flat top pistons, so you have to have machine work done to the 20R head to use it on these. the head is considered more desirable since it has a smaller combustion chamber. the way the intake ports are designed lets the engine rev higher since they lack the lump in the middle of the port that causes the air/fuel mix to swirl that a 22R has -- gives your gas a straight shot into the cylinder. on the downside, the valves are smaller than those of a 22R and you can't just bolt up an EFI intake like you can with most 22Rs.
20R parts are definitely more expensive since the engine hasn't been produced in 25 years, unlike the 22R which just went out of production in 1995. a rebuild kit for a 20R from engnbldr is $329, early 22R('81-84) is $233, and late 22R('85-95) is $214.
