2003 4Runner wheel question - and answer
I have a 2003 4Runner Limited V6, now, with 265/65-17s.
I have a set of 1998 OEM 16" alloys with 245/75 BFG A/Ts on them from my old 4Runner that I would like to use as off-road wheels on the new 4Runner. There is slight interference with the calipers. Does anyone know the proper spacer size required to solve this interference?
I realize that I could take back-space measurements, etc., but I'm up North in the bush at a drilling rig, and the wheels are in my shop a 1,000 kilometers away. I want to order the spacers so they'll be there when I get back.
BTW, the 17" OEM Dunlops suck big time in mud. The 4Runner has 1500 kilometers on it now, one flat already, and won't move in the mud.
Does anyone else miss the Generation 3 ground clearance?
Other than that, a very nice truck. Better power, gas mileage (already), interior room, and ride.
I sure hope someone here has, or can find the answer for me.
Many thanks in advance, and ...
Best regards,
Bill
Update: I finally got back from the rig on May 18th. I fabbed up a 1/4 inch spacer and tested it. There was still caliper interference with the generation 3 16" wheel . I'd guess that a 3/8th spacer would work, but the reduced thread length on the stud wouldn't let me sleep well at night.
If there's anyone in Calgary, or area, that's reading this, and looking for a set of gen 3 16x7 alloys, as new, with centre caps, lugs, locks, and fitted with a set of 50% worn BFG 245/75s, please give me a call at 233-0644.

Unfortunately I don't know of haven't heard of anyone attemping to install 16" from their stock 17". As for spacing, that information I don't have and you're ultimately gonna have to just trial and error that part. Sorry for the bad news... can you even fit the 16's to begin with considering you have the larger caliper?
btw, you're not the only one who misses the height....

Well, it's a little complicated. My new 4Runner came in earlier than I expected. I swapped trucks and had about an hour to swap wheels before I had to leave for this job. The 16" wheel fits fine, except for some minor caliper interference. I'm hoping that a small spacer will solve the problem, and also that someone else here has done it, or can provide an accurate answer.
Thanks for your reply.

Bill,
Wish I could help ya, too.... I will be trying some 16's on my Runner when I finally get the production Daystar lift put on my truck. But considering that I'm going on 3 months since I got the prototype put on my truck, I don't have much hope that it will be very soon...
One thing I did notice is that the standard SR5 wheels should be 16", so theoretically they should fit.
I guess at worst, this post acted as a bump !
