2003 4 Runner Map Lights? Why don't they come on when doors are opened?
Doesn't it seem awful dark when you open your doors on the 2003? I don't know why Toyota didn't make it so the map lights turn on with the rest of the other dome lights. Sometimes they come out with a kit to fix this if they get enough complaints. Anyone have any solutions either their own or with some help from Toyota? I believe all the new 4 Runners do this? Correct?

I found that "No" the lights do not come on unless you leave them on. I have a 2003 limited with factory alarm. I did find out that if you leave them on and arm the alarm that they will automatically shut off though! I thought that was pretty cool!

I've notice the same. If I leave the map lights on and lock the truck, they turn off. What we need is for the darn things to turn on and off with the doors. It's awful dark getting in at night!

A couple of folks have installed "footwell lighting" in their rigs. It really helps bring up the light level of the interior when getting in/out at night.
My specific install is documented here:

you know, toyota did some freaky stuff with this same topic in the second gens. i was looking at andy's 94 4runner and noticed a "door" switch for his map lights. this obviously controlled whether or not the map lights switch on or not when the doors open. my 95 4runner, even though it is NEWER, didnt have this
