2000 4runner - transfer case or transmission problem
Hi all,
This is my first time posting here and I just want to say great forum. Now on to the problem.
I have a 2000 4runner SR5 4wd that has never been off-road. Tonight I was out driving around w/ my wife and I was turning around in a cul-de-sac when I heard a "clack clack clack". Next thing I know, the engine revs went up and the truck would go nowhere (still in drive). I quickly shifted into park, and when I did so, I heard another loud "clack clack clack" sound. I shifted into all of the low gears in 2wd, and the truck went nowhere. I put it into 4wd high, and the truck went nowhere. I then shifted the truck into 4wd low, and put it into drive, and lo and behold, movement! I was able to limp back home at 15 miles an hour (only about a mile drive).
When I got home, I got under the truck and did a little looking around. I had my wife shift it into drive and hold the brake pedal while revving the engine. The rear drive shaft did not spin. As she shifted into park, I heard the same "clack clack clack" noise, and it sounded as if it was coming from the transfer case or transmission.
I'm having it towed to my local shop tomorrow, but i'd like to get an idea of what i'm in for.
Any ideas anyone??? Thanks in advance.
