2 questions regarding 99 4Runner.

Question number one: Is there ANY ECU upgrade chips out there for Toyotas? Everything I find is for the Fords, Chevys, and Dodges. Are there any plans for anyone to start building one for us? For as many Toys out there I would think there would be a market for some.

Also, in the back of the Runner, (very back, on the passager side) there is an access panel in the cargo area (on the side). What's that for? It has straps and looks like mounting points for something in paticular, but for what? At first I thought that was for the tire jack and such, but I found that under the back seat. This area isn't stratched up at all so I don't think it's ever been used for anything.

Thanks guys!

You will get all sorts of answers to these quesitons, but I have a 98.

Yes there are compaines out there who have "mod" chips, but I have no experience with them as I have an extended warranty on my 4runner and the contract specifically prohibits the install of any performance enhancing computer chips or it voids my warranty. So until I get more solid real world testing on these, I am going to pass.

I have a smaller compartment in the same area you described and as I understand that larger compartment is just that, a stowage area to make better use of the empty space in the rear fender area. I use my smaller one for stuffing emergency type stuff in there, tow rope chain, first aid kit, quart of oil etc. More space equals more stuff! Welcome to Yota Tech!

I just hear the chips are bunk and give no real performance upgrades in the Toyotas.

The cargo side is just for cargo. I put my straps, bungee cords, rope, and jump starter cables in there.

i wonder what the compartment is, too...it has those straps for something, which i originally assumed was for the jack and stuff too, and then i found those...lol so what is it for??!?!

i hear that those chips are pointless and dont really do much...

The compartment in the back is called the auxiliary box by the owners manual. The straps are used to hold a warning reflector. The manual goes on to say. “Although the warning reflector is not included as original equipment, this auxiliary box can be used to hold the warning reflector.”

I actually laughed out loud reading that. I can’t imagine being the person who had to type that up for the manual. Who knows…

The only way to "tune" a toyota is with a piggyback computer. You will also need a wideband air/fuel ratio sensor and some tuning knowledge. Toyota's are tuned rich from the factory so leaning them out a bit will usually give you 15-25hp with an intake and exhaust/headers. I dont think it's worth $1000 to make 25hp, where you can buy a used supercharger for $1000 and make 70 more hp (or with fuel mods, 100+hp).
You can use a URD tuning module, (www.urdusa.com) a greddy e-manage, perfect power smt-6 or 7, etc, but they are not "easy" and i doubt it's worth it unless you do more mods.
Good luck!

As for that compartment yeah those warning triangles make sense. I have a small tool box for all of my "emergancy gear" for now. Once everything warms up (-20 today) I may try to move my gear into the compartment.

And for the tuning. I wasn't going to go that far yet with my Runner. I was just wondering why no one like Hypertech, Bully Dog (I know they are for Diesels), Superchips is getting into the Toyotas yet.

That's good to know that Toyota still makes them rich. I had an '88 Celica GT4 and I took it's boost up to 17psi with no problems. Brother took his Supra up over that using a Greddy (I believe it was a Greddy, it's been a few years ago). Come spring I'm looking for an intake and a TB Spacer to addon unless I hear otherwise.

Thanks Guys,

best intake would be the trueflow intake which comes with a new tube and a dry filter. Then do the deckplate mod / elbow mod and that is the best intake you can get. Dont bother with a TBS they do nothing.

None of them make a tuner, because they wouldnt work. a handheld tuner like that works on NO japanese cars, thats why they make piggybacks...

Ok, scrap the TBS. Thanks! As for the TrueFlow, I found this:

http://www.shopatron.com/product/par...298.6683.0.0.0

now that says for the 02-06 3.4L 4Runner. Is there a difference between the 3rd and 4th gen (location of airbox, distances, # of vac. hoses)?

UPDATED:
I kept looking and I found this. It looks the same, but states for the 3rd gen.

The second one will work perfectly for you
there is a huge difference between 3rd and 4th gen 4runners. Only the 96-02 one will work.
