Welded on extended sump (factory) has rusted through at the weld and is leaking oil. More fun and games I guess.

Yes I had the same problem. I have a complete write up on repair (not replacement) in the works with pictures, but for those of you who need know now.
drain oil. (save for re-use if good)
remove mud, oil, and rust and wire brush leak areas .
use brake cleaner for final cleaning
use JB WELD (lots of it) to create vacum seal around area
use por-15 once don to paint remainder of rust area not covered in JBWeld
paint with rustoleum black (or your favorite color) to make all air tight. Two thin coats are better than one thick.
now you have encapsulated the rust, filled the holes, and prevented air from causing more rust.
Put oil in engine and you have engine oil above rust preventing air from reaching rust area.
So far 16 months works fine.
cost $6. Would have replaced, but dropping the front-end ona 98 Tacoma is a PITA**PITA.
