1st gen engine swap...
Will a 3rd gen 3.4 swap into a 1st gen 2.2? my buddy has a 88 22re 4runner with 33's and stock gears, that's losing coolant and making oil, aka something's busted. If it won't swap what will with as little cost/work as possible? He'd like more power than the 2.2. I told him rebuild the 22re and re gear should be the cheapest way out. Any input?

3.4 will not fir the 22RE without some modification. It will fit the engine bay, but there will be plenty of work to do to get it to fit. Try and search this board some more because this is one topic that will be discussed quite often and in rather great detail.

You need to get the engine mounts off of an 88 3.0 v6 4runner. I believe teh 3.4 will bolt up to that. You're also gonna want the 3.0 tranny and transfer case. Then you're also gonna want the 4 pinion v^ rear axle to a handle that power. And I think you would need the driveshafts with the tranny and transfer case.
A couple companies make wiring harnesses to hook up to the computer, and then you just need to run custom exhaust. That's all.
Byt the way, the 22RE is a 2.4

I'd stay with the 22RE, add a header, 2 inch exhaust, after market coil, and run 4.10 gears. It's cheap and works great.
If your buddy chooses to update the engine .... I suggest a ... well ... a ... d@mn ... Chevrolet 4.3 V6. Bewarned W56 transmission doesn't like all that torque. You can find adapters located at www.advanceadapters.com.
The 4.3 swap is inexpensive compared to just about any other. Plent of parts for the 4.3 are available.
I don't mean to insult Toyota owners with a Chevrolet solution. But, I sense his buddy is lookin for cheap (and I mean cheap) power.
Good luck!
