Not even one decade. NV4500's only recently disappeared, NV5600's were used until 2001 with a granny first gear ratio of 5.63:1. In any case none were used on a Toyota so it's kinda moot. Now then I do have a granny first in my wheeling truck tranny and start off in second gear except on the trail. There it sits in low much of the time.

Go drive a 3/4 or beyond standard trans equipped truck.

can anyone chime in here and clarify this once and for all?
This whole idea is stupid. Go out and try and start your vehicle in 2nd gear. Do you feel the torque? Like you just hit nitrous and your about to fly away.. Do you smell that burn? Ya, it's clutch from starting out in second.

Well, yeah, it is. But at least the kid was sharp enough to ask for more opinions, so we owe it to him to set him on the right path. At least he has a 5 speed, so there is hope for him...

I couldnt take stupid automatics anymore- my friends all said that I was crazy but the longer I've been driving it the more I like it. I think serious wheeling might be kind of tough at first - crawling without burning the clutch into nothingness -----I have to tell my friend though he has been driving around w/o first since he got his license!

I always heard that clunking sound when he would start in 2nd with the revs under 1000 and I was like 'you know tim are you sure you shouldnt use first' and he was like 'yeah man, trust me'
