1kzte conversion
What all would be needed to do a 1kzte conversion on a v6 94 4runner? I know I'd need the engine, new gas tank, ecm, bellhousing, what else? Kinda pricing this out and just wanted to know what to include in the budget?

Try Toyota Diesel Madness
I think you're going to have to swap out your tranny and transfer case also plus mess with wiring in an ECU. But there's a guy on TDM that says that wiring in the ECU of a 1KZTE is as easy as wiring in a SB Chevy and says he has the scematics to prove it.

Hey Praufet....it's been awhile. I can't add much as far as what you need to do to make this work, but I can say that if I were to do it over again, I would go with a diesel engine. The diesel would be absolutely idea for an offroad or dual purpose 4Runner.
As far as the wiring. I can't see that it would be hard at all. I was a diesel tech in the Coast Guard and there isn't much to them. I use to work for Chrysler before that (I know, a sin). Either way, diesel engines are very simple engines and they are all pretty much the same, from cummings to detroit diesels to CAT to Paxman. The really new engines have alot to them as far as emissions and smoke control, but they're easy to wire up.
I'd say do some research, and go for it. Look on google. Try putting in the engine code and 4Runner or tacoma/truck. Find out what tranny will bolt up to it. Research prices.

Hello,
My 4Runner is a 3.0TD (1KZ-T).
The only difference between 1KZ-T and 1KZ-TE is that mine has mechanical injection and the TE has electronic injection. But is the same power, you'll be surprised if you test a 3.0TD for the low rpm torque.
Dunno if this will help you, I've a R150F TCase.
Let me know if you've some questions or need pics.

I think it would be much easier to install if you got a half cut. That way you don't miss anything.
In the Land of the Rising Sun, there are several vehicles which use the 1KZ-TE engine: Hilux Surf (2nd & 3rd gens), LC Prado, Hiace van. In Oz, the 4x4 Hilux pickup also uses the 1KZ-TE engine. The 2nd gen Hilux Surf (KZN130G/W) has the non-intercooled version. The LC Prado KZJ78W also has the non-intercooled version. The 3rd gen Hilux Surf (KZN185G/W) has the optional intercooler and is mated to the optional A340F tranny with optional multi-mode 4WD. The LC Prado (KZJ95W) has the intercooled version and is mated to the optional A343F tranny. There are also versions of the KZJ95W that has fulltime 4WD.

Sorry for being late to chimp in. Lets see, the best way to do this is to get a complete half cut with tranny especially you are getting a 1kz-te which require the ecu and wireness for the swap. The whole process is pretty much a direct swap, the only thing you need to modify is the engine mount. You need to relocate the engine mount and you are done.

Hey Roy, do you know if it's possible to mount the intercooler of one KZN185 in a KZN130? I think the hood is very close to the engine and the intercooler hasn't enought space but I'm not sure.
With a BL I think this will be easier.

Hi David,
Yes, you'll need a body lift for it. KZN185 intercooler is somewhat thick and I think it will hit the hood without a body lift. There are guys in Oz who've installed an intercooler/hood scoop in their N130 Hilux Surfs. Another option would be to place a WRX or Evolution intercooler up front but you'll need a lot of pipe work for this. But it can be done as proven by a guy from Norway with a 2L-T 4Runner. Check out http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/ for detailed info.

hey man,
I've got a '91 4Runner that I did a swap-over to a 1kzte. I got a half-cut from Japan through Jarco (an import company). I swapped the engine, transmission, transfer case, firewall and dashboard. My 4Runner is now right-hand drive. I just drove down to Guatemala and back in it (13,000 miles, many off road), and its still running good. I do have overheating issues though, that I have have to still work out. Let me know if you want any info on doing the swap.... I'm also thinking of selling mine...

Overheating?? I hope the cylinder head hasn't cracked. Otherwise it's gonna be costly unless you got someone who can get the cylinder for cheap. One cause for overheating is the radiator.

why not use a 1HD-T??
here is an e-mail i sent to and engine co. and this is how i found you all.
below is e-mail i sent to engine co.
What do you mean by half cut ?? ” Half cut will probably be the best way to go since it will have all the misc harnesses and computers etc.”
I looked at the forums and other sites before dropping you a e-mail, and did at one time consider; “You might consider using a 3.0 liter 1KZ-T/ 1KZ-TE (130hp 213ftlbs stock)”
I’m looking at larger engine due to added weight to truck.
My suspension is highly modified. Heavier than stock and added frame cross trusses in front; for winch and steel bumper.
What trans usually goes behind a 1HD-T?? manual??
DOES THE TRANS have to be an automatic? And If I can mate the R151f; which my trans is a R150f due to me have a v6 gas engine, to the 1HD-T will the original fly wheel bolt up to the 1HD-T engine crank shaft?
The only other question I would have is what is the length of the engine; from the front crank pulley tip to where the trans bell housing mates to the engine.
So I can see over all length to see what modification I might need to make.
Thanks for all your help and info
Phil

Hi Phil. We have a 1HD-T leaving Japan soon, should be here early spring. Not sure what the status will be on the harness. 1HD-T engines do not have a computer.
As much as we would like to sell you a 1HD-T, I believe it is going to be too heavy an engine to support in your Hilux, then there is the tranny interface issues, and then rear question as to well the R151F? will cope with the 270 foot pounds of torque.
You won’t be able to use a cruiser tranny and case due to your centered diffs.
You might consider using a 3.0 liter 1KZ-T/ 1KZ-TE (130hp 213ftlbs stock)
You might find some helpful info at http://www.toyotadiesel.com/forums/

Good Luck
