1998 Brake Release Thud in the Rear
#21
Make sure you try using another rear axle seal too. The toyota OEM one is a major PIA to install, the one I got an AutoZone had a champfer/lip on it that allowed to be put in much easier. I also purchased a gigantic socket the diameter of the seal and used that to tap it in! Good luck.
Had a question re: the grease as I have the thud too. I read on 4runners.org that some fittings (e.g., U joints) require lithium grease while others (e.g., slide yoke, double joints) get Moly. Can I simply use synthetic when regreasing ALL fittings??

Nice thread resurrection. Although the they probably figured out their problems over the last 4 years, it's always good to add thoughts to old threads for the future readers.
I have to disagree on the non-OEM recommendation for axle seals. I used some autozone replacements and they both blew within months. I've been running OEMs for years now with no problems. I've also come across a few threads in which other people have ran into problems with non-OEM seals. Easier to put in seems to make them easier to leak too.
Don't know about the different types of grease, I just use whatever's in the gun cuz I don't think it makes much of a difference. With 200K, I've never had issues.
