1998 4runner Auto Tranny Flush Redline D4 ?
I am going to do a home flush along the lines of this:
http://home.centurytel.net/stevenjac...sh/tranny.html
I am not going to drop the pan and replace the filter cause I had to do that to replace the starter about 15K ago (long story).
My questions are: Should I buy 16 qts of fluid for this job?
I have 165K on the engine and don't know the last time it was changed. Can I use synthetic?
I was going to use Redline D4 is this ok? Other option was to go cheap route and do Valvoline Max life. Any opinions?
Last question I can think of is if I am putting a synthetic in and I had Val. Max life or other DEX III type before is this bad to mix them?
Edit: The walkthrough says to use a 3/8" Fuel line. Is this 3/8 ID? I was going to do the breather plug mod and that needs 3/8" ID fuel line so that would be nice if I can just get one size
Thank you for the help

I have D4 in my A340 at the moment, and used 14qts and did just fine getting all the old fluid out.
Drain 2qts at a time, no more. 3/8 ATF hose is the size you need. That will be fine for the breather as well.
If D4 is a little pricey (I did my flush 5 years ago), I'd go with the Castrol Import ATF. It is JAOS approved and will meet all specs. I'd also throw in with the fluid change a bottle of Lubegard red. I am not a big fan of the newest Maxlife in this tranny, but others have seemed to use it with no problems to speak of.
Good luck.
