1997 runner gas tank only holds 15 gallons???
I think its supposed to be a 18.5 gallon tank but everytime i fill up on empty i get around 15 gallons in. when the light comes on how much gas is left?
I am getting around 200 miles per 15 gallons, is that average for stock? thanks

ive got a 02 4runner and i had a similar problem at first, then i noticed that different gas pumps allowed different amounts of fuel in for some reason. i have to keep pumping even after it quits, that way it moves the needle up way past the full line. my light usually goes on when i have about 2 gallons left i take it cuz when i do that i get about 16.5 from the pump.

When I ran out of gas completely, I barely rolled into the gas station (good thing I didn't have to push), it filled in a total of 17.1 gallons. I think the rest is at the way bottom of the 18.5 gallon tank.

On a "normal" schedule, I refill at around 220 miles, which equates to about 15MPG (80% city, 20% highway). If I feel like worrying every mile, I'll wait till 240-250, which will fill about 16.5 gallons into my tank. I am guessing I could run it till 270-280 (which is basically running it dry) and then fill about 18 gallons in there? I am also guessing that if you run it dry and fill it up so that the gas tops out of the pipe, it'll measure about 18.5. I could be wrong tho

I'm talking about my 1997 Camry at this point. It has a 18.5 gallon tank, the idiot light comes on at 15 gallons. The reason is the gas in the tank acts as a cooler for the pump. When it runs down low, there is no gas on the pump to keep it cool, when they get hot they fail. So I think it is Toyota's way of protecting ourselfs from ourselfs not filling up till it says it's empty.
Also in my book it says Not to keep filling after the pump clicks off. There is a float like system in the tank, over filling the tank raises the float too high and in time will make your gas gauage read wrong.

When i fill my tank after the gas light comes on, I usually put between 13 and 15 gallons in. If you're only getting 200mi/15gal thats 13.33 mpg, I typically get more than that (currently around 16 with winter gas) but you might just have a heavy foot. There are a number of reasons for not topping of the tank. When you top off the tank after it clicks, some of the fuel is sucked into the vapor recovery system. So you're paying for gas that doesn't go into your tank. I was also told in the service dept at the stealership that topping off the tank can cause your catalytic converters to fail. And besides, if you're paying at the pump with a card, it doesn't make sense to top it off to try and round it to the nearest dollar.

I've been getting about 240 miles per tank, and thats also when the light turns on. When I go to the pump I can only put about 14.7 gallons in, which made me think I had a 15 gallon tank too. But, apparently it is 18.5; where is the other 3.5 gallons at the pump?

the light goes on prematurely to give you time and distance to get to a pump
if you figure most ppl avg about 15-16 mpgs, that gives people about 50 miles to get to a pump.

I get about the same as Lee does since I like acceleration up to speed and that's what hurts. When I feel I've driven long enough with the fuel light on I usually only can fill up with about 15 gallons but it's better to have a fuel guage read prematurely than late. The most I've ever squeezed in the tank is 16.1 gallons.

we have a 3 gallon reserve tank. When the gas light comes on, then it taps into the reserve. So when you fill up, you're only filling 15. also, you can't put 18 gallons in an 18 gallon tank, only about 17.8 or so, when the other .2 being a 'buffer', if you will.

Actually I don't think you can use the the last gallon since i don't know anybody who's filled up with 17 gallons unless you fill the filler neck also.

I see all these mileage results from 3rd gens and I have a hard time believing 2nd gen owners claim over 300 from an engine alot of people are lucky to see 16mpg in stock trim.

I don't know what I'm doing right, but my '97 gets 20mpg like clock work. I only burn half the tank between fillups so as to keep a 8 gallon reserve :-)
