1997 4runner

Last week My 4Runner wouldn't start after work. I had it jumped and it started just fine. I headed home but had no bright lights or radio. The digital clock was very faint also. I got home and killed it. It wouldn't start again. I've been having some power surges here lately and after this I assume the alternator has gone out. Today I change the alternator and nothing! At first, i could hear the clicking in the fuse box like the alarm system was going haywire. I would go through the steps to reset it and still, nothing. I replaced the ALT 100 fuse, a burned out 10 amp, and the 30 under the steering wheel.
I have nothing now. No power, whatsoever.. Any advice. I've searched other threads and just don't see the answer. Thanks in advance.

That definitely sounds like the alternator went bad, but there could be a few things nagging you now. Did you get your old alternator tested at the parts store? Are you sure you got it all plugged back in and wires connected correctly?

Are you sure you checked all the fuses?

Did you recharge the battery? If the battery was dead (likely) before the new alternator, it's probably still dead now, thus no power to the starter.

Also, check your ground wires, especially at the fuse box under the hood. I had some similar issues about a year ago and that ground was corroded and eventually completed disconnected.

Check that stuff and report back. Hopefully it's just a small issue.

Since you replaced the alternator already and still have issues, I would look at the battery next. Take it out and get it tested at an auto parts store. The battery is an integral part of the electrical system and if it has a few bad cells it can't take a full charge and will not be able to absorb any electrical loads placed upon it, even with the engine running.
