1996 3.4L V6 Starter Motor Help
I'm not sure, but I think I need to replace my starter motor. I have to turn my key 5 or 6 times to get my truck to start. After it runs for a while (when warm) it starts every time. When it is cold it just "clicks" once then nothing.
I pulled the starter, but it is like no other starter I've ever seen. It does not appear to have a solenoid. When I had Checker Auto Parts test it the motor spun but the shaft did not move in or out. Is it supposed to? Is there such a thing as a two piece starter?
Please Help!

it is more than likely the starter contacts, they can be replaced and are very easy to do so. look at the back of the starter and you'll see a plate w/3 bolts in it remove plate and you'll see the plunger, remove plunger and you'll see the wear on the contacts (as well as the plunger) the dealler should have the contacts in stock since they replace them constantly (get the cheap aftermarket ones they should have those as well) this http://www.sleeoffroad.com/technical/tz_starter_rebuild.htm should help you although its for a land cruiser its roughley the same

I just replaced the contacts on my 92 4runners starter a few weeks ago. The cost of the project was $25.02 for the set of contacts. Here are a few links i have used to help me out.

The first link shows the different size contacts for starters. Im not sure what size/shape you would need. Compair and get part numbers and call your local yota dealer.

Brent, I had the same problem like yours last Summer. I did replace the contacts inside the starter. The hardest part was to remove the starter out of way in very tight space. I had to disconnect one of power steering tubings at the pinion gear to free up the starter under the vehicle. The rest of starter repair was so breeze. Good Luck.
