well after '85 the celica went to FWD, but i'd imagine the earlier years could've overlapped.

i think some of the 2wd specific transmissions for the '84-88 trucks were the W50, W55, G40, W40(?), i'm sure a few overlap with the celica

Looks like mine might be a W56.

the W56 was used in 2wds as well, but i thought it was mostly in 1 tons. i don't think the celica ever got a W56 though

Your probably right. It's funny that so many things in the celica were used in the trucks. Just goes to show what kind of potential that pickups might have...

well, you can even compare an 80s RWD celica to the truck quite well:

engines:
celica - 22R, 22RE('83-up GT i think)
truck - 22R, 22RE

tranny:
celica - W50?, W55?
truck - W50, W55

rear end:
truck - 7.5 solid, 8.0 solid
celica - 7.5 solid, 7.5 IRS

and then you have to take into consideration that a lot of 2wd trucks were LIGHTER than celicas!

Kyle, do the 4X4 4spd's have a deeper 1st gear or something? For some reason, 1st gear in mine really doesn't have much range. Maybe 20mph tops in mine. It just winds out to quickly compared to the other gears.

I remember a site on the web called 22R mods.com (or something similar to that) which had a message board for owners of 22r trucks. The site owner had a description of the mods done to his truck on the site. He listed a "close-ratio" 5spd Celica transmission swap as one of his mods, but I can't seem to find the site anymore in order to email him about the particulars.

Yeah, a mid '70's Hilux would be pretty nice. They're just a little too boxy for my tastes.lol! A fixed up Stout would definitely be cool! I actually had the opportunity to sit in one at the local junkyard once. Geez, talk about primitive! They make the interior of my '88 look like a luxury car.lol!

I've always preferred the styling of the mid '70's Datsun trucks to the Toyota's of that vintage though. The grill design of those Datsun trucks with that V shape and the inset headlights always reminded me of a '69 Camaro.

When Toyota finally came out with the wedge-shaped upper body line on their trucks for '84, that made me want to get a '84-'88 style Hilux ever since. I wonder if that black '85 4x4 Hilux at the end of "Back to the Future" is still around? Man, how I always wanted that truck.lol!

Any thoughts of a 5vze or 7mgte into an older yota 2wd trucks? If they really are 2900lbs (which is suspect unless ya got a scale reciept ) they'd be crazy fun to drive.

Big question would be would hte motor mounts match up....

7mgte swap would be insane in a 2wd truck, someone should do that.

There is a video of a Supra engine in a 2wd truck at this site:

not suspect at all, my 4x4's official factory weight is 2900ish. me and a buddy could pick up the back end of his '78 and move it around...they were the true definition of a "light truck!"

That would be cool. Is there any way to put a 7mgte in one?

Indeed however add fuel, add oil, add fluids, and add you. That should quite easily knock the weight up to 3200lbs. My 4runners specs list 3986lbs but right now with me in it, it sits at 4500lbs.

btw - light vehicles lend themselves to really funny practical jokes.... like putting your truck lengthwise btwn two telephone poles with about 1" of total clearance.

i'm sure it's possible, but the engine bay would be a little tight. a warmed up 22R would make it fly, i'd be scared to death of driving one equipped with a supra engine
