02 4runner Swap, help needed
Hi. Here is the deal: Im getting a 2002 4runner V6 RWD SR5 for my 18th birthday. I want to swap out the engine, put in something bigger and torquer, 5sp manual tranny, 4wd conversion and suspension upgrades. I know you will tell me to use search, but I did and couldn't comeup with all the info I need.
Here are my questions:
1) I want to go with chevy small block for the swap or maybe something else?
2) what transmission should I get b/c I will convert to 4x4 and I want this tranny to be able to take a lot of abbuse.
3) what else should I know?
4) how much would my mods cost me?
thanks for support

1) 502 ram jet
2) w56 will be perfect
3) the search feature on yotatech
4) I would say roughly 8k
Dude why not just get a 4x4 tahoe instead??? or an 06 or 07 with the V8 and 4wd. Its kinda hard to see the point in getting a 4runner when you dont want a 4runner
Now if you were getting an older model like a 1st or 2nd gen it would be easier to swap the 350 into a 5speed and would save you about 7k. thats just me though
by the way disregard 1) 2) and 4)

Thanks for your reply!
The reason why I am not going to buy a truck is b/c I have too many memmories. I learned how to drive, got my first speeding ticket, won a race and got stuck with it in a offroad during a crazy rain storm. So... There is no way I will give it up.

who is going to be doing all the work to it? Family member, friend or shop? all in all it would still be cheaper for you to get a 1st or second gen and swap in a 350 and smash that to hell. or is it just a mall crawler?

if you have the 8k for the 350 swap i would say the hell with that and supercharge it.
a couple fuel mods, exhaust.
youll still have a few grand for lift, tires....

You can but a cummins desiel in the 4runner if you wanted to. I think a select few have pulled out close to 300 at the wheels on the 3.4 I take it you have a second car as well. Since you and your friends dont know anything about engines and drivetrains it is definitely going to be a learning experience for you and your truck will be out of commision for a while.

are you seriously going to wheel this thing or just pick up girls at the mall? If you are serious you should really look into getting a 1st or 2nd gen and learn to wheel it stock and then build it up. Depending on what part of the country you are in body damage will be an issue. If you are around the southwest then by all means convert it to 4wd throw some sliders on it and you wont see a scratch. If you are around the midwest then anticipate carnage

just swap it over to 4wd and supercharge it.
To swap 4wd, all you need is 4x4 tranny, tcase, front diff, front and rear dshafts, 4x4 spindles, hubs or add, and cvs.
Your gonna have abs, so that adds a little bit of trickyness to it, if you want to keep abs. I will be selling my add spindles and cvs soon, when i switch over to manual hubs.

no..we don't have any experience with trucks..but we have some experience with motor. Last month we finished a B18c GSR swap on my 2000 civic.
also.. I want for my SUV to be 100% street and emissions legal.

also I came in from a minor offroad yesturday. I tried to climb some "small" rocks and at first bent my front Skid plate (engine guard) later on I got stuck and my friend pulled me out, but I bent my right step rail.
I was able to fix the rail, but didn't do anything to the engine guard b/c have no idea how to fix it. I think it is aluminum, and if I try to unbend it, it will break, I think.
Where would you buy a replacement engine guard?

Since your in california, to keep the runner emissions legal you will have to use the same year or newer engine with all the factory emissions equipment hooked up.
