I was changing the spark plugs, and figured while I was in there, I'd clean the throttle body. I noticed that when I twist the throttle lever, the butterly only opens a quarter turn, but I can stick my fingers in there and lift the butterly to a fully open position.

I did a search and saw that a few of you guys were taking the slack out of the throttle cable to get the butterfly to open more. were you getting more power from it? worse gas mileage?

I noticed the same thing with my 2001 4Runner. I did tighten the cable a bit so the throttle moves as soon as the pedal is pushed but it didn't help the butterfly opening, still only about 1/4.

I'm thinking it must open more when the engine is running, as I've got lots of power, but I can't verify that. The engine won't run with the intake tube disconnected.

 

There must be a solenoid or something which prevents it from opening with the engine off on those years.
There is no way the butterfly only opens 1/4 and the vehicle drives normally.

 

That's what I was thinking. If you press the gas pedal to the floor with the engine off it goes most of the way down before the throttle cable even moves. With the engine running the cable moves right away.

I guess I need to stick a miniature camera in the intake tube and watch what happens when the engine is running.

There are 3 cables. The accelerator cable, transmission cable, and the cruise control cable. Don't quote me on this but I think the transmission cable is what helps to open the butterfly valve more, if I understood the shop foreman correctly. On GM vehicles there are several sensors that help to open the valve from the transmission cable. The throttle cable is just ONE of the sensors that help the PCM determine engine load but the transmission cable is the main control if that makes any sense. If not then I will ask him again.

 

There's only 1 cable on my 2001 4Runner, for the gas pedal. Like I said before it seems to work OK. I was just a little confused when I first looked at my throttle body, and the valve didn't open fully.

 

So you don't have cruise control? My only next guess is that it only opens up more due to the ECM when it reads a higher load. Have you suffered any performance losses? If so then maybe it does need an adjustment. I have not done any adjustments for GM vehicles, but it may be different for Toys.

I have cruise and auto tranny, just no kick down cable or cruise control cable. I think they're both controlled electronically on the 01.

And no performance loss, in fact compared to the 93 I was driving for 8 years performance is amazing.
