01-04 Tacome vs 97 4runner & 02 Tundra

I currently drive a Ford Mustang, and I'm considering making the switch back to a Toyota. I really like the 01-04 4dr Tacomas. My last vehicle was a 97 SR5 4runner V6 auto 2wd. I liked it, just had a chance to trade and I took it. The only thing I really didn't like was power, seemed sluggish to me. My dad has a 02 Tundra v6, manual with TRD package. I LOVE the way it rides and drives. I've looked around, and it seems all three have a 3.4 liter v6 engine, is it the same one? The 02 Tundra feels like it has a good bit more power than my 4runner did, although that may all be in my head. How does the Tacoma compare to my dad's Tundra? I really won't be pulling much, just using it for daily driving and occasionally hauling smaller stuff. Thanks for any input.

Well in the 02 Tundra, you have the 3.4 V6 and a 4.7L V8.
So if it were me having a 3.4 in my 4Runner I would get the V8 if going for the 02 Tundra.
But if you dont need it, dont get it. I think you may only need the Taco based on what you are saying.
Obviously the Taco is smaller as it is pretty much a chopped up 4Runner. So think of your 97 4Runner. If you liked it, the odds are you will like the taco.

I don't want a full size truck. I'm looking only only at the Tacoma. Maybe my post was a little confusing. Although my 97 4runner and the 02 Tundra both have a 3.4 v6, they feel completely different, the Tundra feels like it has a good bit more power. My question is how does the Tacoma compare? Still a 3.4. Would being a manual make a difference in the Tundra. If it is the same engine, I'd think the Tacoma would be a little sportier than the Tundra due to less weight. Thanks.

the 3.4 is a really good engine. your perception of the tundra being faster is probably due to the manual trans. if you get the trd offroad taco then it comes with an upgraded suspension and will handle more like the tundra than the 4runner probably. do you want a tacoma with a manual or auto?

Aren't all the 01-04 Tacoma Double Cabs auto? I'd probably be getting an auto anyway. The Tundra drives and rides much better than my 4runner did, that is probably the biggest thing I'd be concerned about.

I have a 03 DC TRD 4wd. Amazing truck. I use it for work and play, and the thing takes what I give it.

The auto is fine. I've had both a manny Tacoma and the auto in the 03. I appreciate the auto in almost every situation.
