Like you, I pulled the whole trim piece off (1 min), then spent half an hour or more chipping off the old plate and glue remnants
yeah, pretty much exactly my experience. lots of broken parts, and i used an "x-acto" chisel to remove a lot of the adhesive/remnant plastics.

the panel you removed was from pre-'87 versions, and it might have been factory tri-color, but it wasn't correct for '87.

like yours, the added "a/c" callout is annoying, as the button itself has the a/c callout on my #2. the button does not have a/c on my #1, however.

last month, my wife and i went for an evening ride in the cj. about 10 minutes from home, noticed a persisitent squeal/scratch/whine from the passenger front. that's usually a wheel bearing, and if it's making noise, it's already toast. got home, parked it in the garage, and left it there 'til morning.

jacked the front, grabbed the wheel, and turned it - yup, wheel bearing. could feel the roughness and see up/down/side-to-side movement easily. checked the driver side, too. while it hadn't been making noise, it, too, was junk.

now, for the 4runner part.

checked my notebook to see when i last serviced the wheel bearings in the '87s. for #1, it was 83,642k miles ago on 3/12/2015, so clearly due for clean/repack. for #2, it was 28,400k miles ago on 7/26/2021, so still within the normal service interval.

pulled the wheel hubs/bearings from #1, and sure enough, the inner hub seals were worn out and just beginning to leak. bearings were still smooth, with no roughness to them, so i likely dodged a bullet running them nearly 3x the normal service interval. after about 1 day of working on them (i replaced the rotors/pads too since i already had a set of brand new oem rotors [from @keycw] that have been picking up dust for several years now), everything is back together - oh, also had the inner wheel bearing seals on hand. so far, so good with a few hundred miles on the repacked bearings & new brakes. re-ordered a set of the inner seals to have on hand, too.

the lesson from the jeep - the new bearings and seals (and it turns out needed new spindle bearings) came to over $225 in parts, vs about $6 for two new inner seals and bearing grease, all for almost the same amount of time - driving the old races out takes longer than a clean & repack. i'm sure the toyota bearings etc would be about the same amount, so it was worth it to get it done prior to failure.

just got back from a trip to MI and back (2nd of the year, one more to go!!). took #2, and ran it out on the 32x11.5/15 achilles desert hawks. turned out to be a good choice. allowed me to cruise at 70 mph and kept the rpms down to about 2600-2750, rather than running at 3100 when running 235/75/15s or 30x9.5/15s (which is only about 68 mph). kept up with traffic on the southern tier expressway and I-90/I-80. with the stock 4.10 gears, i could run in 5th along the flats and small hills, but any moderate hill, i had to drop into 4th; still, even in 4th, rpms at 70mph were only around 3100. in the steep hill sections along the southern tier (I-86) and I-88, sometimes needed to drop to 3rd just to do 60, but that's the drawback to bigger tires.

it rode really nice on the 32s, and i had them at 21psi front & rear. averaged right around 19.9 mpg for the 2000 mile round trip, which is lower than when i run the 235/75s or the 30s and get about 24 mpg. i'll probably run them again on the next trip (the 32s). the flotation is nice for northern michigan sand roads, and it saves me from carrying the 32s in the cargo space in the 4runner.

fwiw, i ran it harder heading up to the camp in the northern lower peninsula on US 130, where the limit is 75 mph. rpms at 75 are just a tic under 3000, so not bad. when i ran into moderate traffic, i backed off and ran 68 or so, then bumped back up to 75 when the traffic thinned out again. with the smaller tires, it wasn't really comfortable to go that speed; with the 32s, it was fine.

heading home, east along I-86, thought i'd blown the engine (very loud Ka-POW). shook the 4runner, and made my ears ring. the semi truck that i was passing blew a pair of tires on the trailer, and the 4runner was just forward of the trailer tires. lucky that i wasn't a bit further back, or that it wasn't the semi's steer tire or traction tires.

nice apples on this tree. we sampled a few, and they were tasty. lots of animal tracks in the sandy road, too, so the wildlife agrees!

just got back from the 3rd new england-to-MI-and-back trip of 2024. the foliage along the entire corridor of central new england, NY, northwest corner of PA, OH, and MI was stunning; the best i've ever seen in a landslide. long-lasting, vivid, with depth. pictures don't adequately capture the canvas, but they're the best i can do..

other than the road shot, this set is from the camp property..

the road to the camp

arrived at camp up north - not much rain here since august, as the grass looks no different from when i mowed it back then

pretty much peak colors

marked for harvest
