ready to install

this housing was better, about 3/4 of the metal remained

completed assembly, stainless screw heads visible on the lenses.

installed and the lights both work, and the key functions correctly.

a little bit out-of-order, but i took some more pictures of the tailgate trim/plate light unit (the spares that i have) to show a bit more.

the two "spare" panels

not bad paint on one (better than the paint on the original that i put back on '87 #1)

light housing mounting tabs, repaired with gorilla gel glue

key switch/tumbler mounting location

and the housings and mounting hardware. painted with por-15, and the gaps in the housings covered with fiberglass.

the three remaining light housings - one "as removed", one painted, and one painted and encased with fiberglass (the fourth housing completely disintegrated) - note the missing metal in two of these

the condition of the housings - this one had more metal remaining than the ones i repaired and installed already (new england's winters and salt are hard on metal parts)

por-15 treated, ready for fiberglass covering - need to fill the gap and cover the spring where the wiring makes its connection to the bulb

ready to be used - painted and 'glassed - only had pinhole gaps to cover, but the spring for the bulb was about 1/2 exposed, so that's now encased in fiberglass; the spring still works properly to allow installation/removal of the bulb

the single complete set of mounts - started with 3 panels, and basically have enough useable parts to repair two (one of which is already installed on '87 #1) these are painted with por-15. no fiberglass needed

took a drive with my wife yesterday. made a circuit on secondary highways, mostly running up the connecticut river valley, and then back south in the same west central part of the start. passed through portions of the white mountain national forest several times. a bit of rain throughout the ride, but never really any heavy stuff. put 220 miles on it, with zero interstate travel (the best kind of driving). didn't take a lot of photos. drove a couple of highways that i don't recall ever driving/riding before - the entirety of route 135 from woodsville to lancaster, and a portion of route 142 from whitefield through bethlehem to franconia. not much traffic, and great scenery for the entire trip. mostly 40 mph, with some brief 55 zones.

almost half-way on the trip, at the ice cream place.(samsung phones suck as far as using them, and for taking pictures - i will be going back to an iphone in the future) - the blurry photo is pretty typical when using this piece of crap phone. my iphone SE took much better photos.

highly recommended - they make and process their own ice cream - great selection of flavors - i had a dish with a scoop of chocolate chili and a scoop of coffee cookie dough. delicious. need to go back and try some other flavors (i did sample the maple bacon)

canoed under this back in the 1970s with my parents, brother, and grandfather. don't believe i'd ever seen it from the road, nor been across it until yesterday - picture from nh route 135, but the short road across the river with the bridge is not 135.

the NH end

half way - low-light blurrrrr

light at the end

the other side

which is the VT end

4runner #2 just returned a tank of 397 miles. fill-up took 16.3 gallons. it was pretty much empty - i stalled at the end of the off-ramp, and nearly stalled at the 2 stop signs on the way to the station. sputtered plenty after the stops, but was able to get it to the fuel island under its own power. it was 24.3 mpg (a shade better, since i always round up for the fuel amount added).

only a short stretch for the entire tank was on the interstate, the rest was secondary roads where 45 to 55 was the norm. no complaints, although i really did want to hit 400 miles on the tank.

and, just like that, #1 just returned a tank averaging 22.6 mpg. didn't push it to empty, though - only took 14.2 gallons to fill. very happy with that for an un-rebuilt 22re with almost 220k on it. same circumstances as for #2 above - almost no interstate travel, mostly state highways of 45 to 55 mph. i've noted the mpg for the tank every time i've filled up (i always fill the tank when getting gas) since i purchased each 4runner.

from my recollection, for #1, that's the best mpg in at least 5 years, although #2 consistently gets tanks averaging 22 to 24 mpg.

center console - single vs double vs rear seat heat
wheels - steel vs chrome vs alloy
sunroof
plain bucket seat vs sport seat
rear seat vs seat delete panel
power vs manual windows
wing vents vs no wing vents
standard transmission shift knob - plastic/rubber vs leather covered

Wally are you familiar with this site? The 1987 and 1989 pages have options lists.

Hi Wally, I finally figured out where you are on this new to me site.

This runner is new to me for about a year and bought from the original owner in California. I bought a 1982 Toyota 4x4 brand new in Santa cruz back in the day and had fun doing a little off roading in the Santa Cruz mountains with it.

I was not really in the market for a 4runner as i was looking at another Datsun 240Z the guy had for sale which I did buy. he asked if I wanted an old 4runner that his uncle bought brand new but parked many years ago. I said not really interested in it and then he said that I could have it for the cost of a horn button for a 240Z that he was keeping. Twist my arm and loaded up the 4runner on a trailer. Did not realize until after I got it home that it was the first year of 4runners, SR5, 22r with 5 speed, original paint, and only covered 134,000 miles.

The more research I did on these the more I fell in love with it and the more I wanted to bring it back to life. My plans are to keeping it in close to factory stock and refurb where needed. If it were a 240Z i would know all the places to get parts, hell i have about 20 bins of parts and half a shop full of parts for Z cars, nothing for 4runners or truck.

Although I live in Cali currently, our plan is to move to the Lake Norman area of North Carolina in the next few years....hopefully won't have to worry about a Bi-annual smog check anymore.

Just wanted some guidance from you on how to proceed and going in the right direction...although subjective i know.

lucky for me I have a very good friend who's son in law works on these older trucks and runners out of his home shop.....has several customer's trucks in his shop at any given time but at least I have a place to start. Planning to take this runner to his shop in a few weeks to drop the tank and do all the other things needed to get this thing running...

I will send a few pics of the runner and you can let me know what other pics you need for you data compilation.

Cheers, Mike

Great truck! I believe Wally is studying the trim tags on the firewalls to decode options info…

mike, that's the tag. thanks for the backstory too. and the photos of the interior. i dig those seats. your wheels aren't oem, but that is a pretty good looking rig, in solid condition. really cool you sharing the info & photos.

you don't have to drop the tank, there is an access hatch under the rear passenger seat.

and mel, i have visited that website in the past. i saw your 4rth runner posted on 1st gen mafia today.

Melrose, saw your last post re first gen 4runner classified group....I just joined that too as i will be looking for the factory radio and surround for the radio. Also looking for the stock SR5 wheels for an 84 which I think are steel, painted white with caps?

Steel, white yes. Caps, i don’t think so. My first 4runner was an 84, back in the mid 90s.

still returning good gas mileage on the secondary roads. last week #1 was at 22.4 mpg, and the odometer is still right on, as we ran a section, twice, with a "measured mile".

Hello @wallytoo
I'm here as a reference from the recent BaT auction of a 1984 wine red 4Runner. Mine is also a factory wine red, but has been redone in orange, lifted 7", running 35's, 22R with Weber carb and long tube exhaust header, and a custom interior. I found a rear seat delete panel, so I had it powder coated and went that route. That allowed me to have just the front 2 buckets done in leather. I still have the factory 1984 striped rear seats but I don't know what to do with them, but I'm certainly not throwing them away. I'll get you the VIN in a couple of days (too close to 4th of July for me to commit to running home and immediately posting it up).

Edit: Updated with VIN in last 2 pictures. It’s an SR5 without A/C.

Anyway, here is my girl with 200,000 miles:

Probably so. Same Username for most sites (BaT, TacomaWorld, 4Runners.com, T4R, Bronco6G, etc.).

I have a couple stereo surrounds if you're interested in one of them. I need to get pictures to post up for you.
