Toyota4x4907's 22re build. attempt two

Well, my '95 22re powered 4runner is starting to knock at certain RPMS, smoke, burns/leaks insane amounts of oil, idles weirdly, and just sounds bad. Sooo last Saturday I picked up a 22re to rebuild and drop in my truck in a month or two. This will be pretty slow build unless I can get a hold of lots of money at one time
Plans- head: if funds become available- Engnbldr street RV head and cam. Otherwise just engnbldr 268 cam.
Block: new pistons probably. Most likely will need to be bored out (see pictures)
Hm...other than that, just a normal rebuild. Will be using engnbldr and TOYOTA for parts (Dealership parts are about the same as aftermarket here )

Cylinder 1

2

3

Aand quatro

And thats where I left off for now. Will probably start cleaning out the head after dinner.

Oh and this is attempt two because last summer I bought a 22re, tore it down and realized my truck didnt need a new heart...yet..so I sold it. But now it DEFINITELY does.

Guess whats wrong with one of these pistons!!

If you guessed #3 isnt coming up all the way, you are correct!

Feels like the rod bearing is barely attached. About to flip it over and dig in

mmm....rust in #4 cyl. Still useable?

Good grief, why would someone do that????? I mean, ..... 15$ more to keep a good conscience and send someone down the road not wondering, "Hmmm, wonder when that rod'll blow through the block, derrrrrrr".

Sorry man, that STINKS! My vote is to let a shop take a look.....unless you're planning on doing this 100%. in that case, just measure it out, start honing at that hole and if it's a no go.... you can save yourself another several hours, yeah?

Did you pull the rod cap yet?

I got my milk nickle on the crank being messed up.

You might be able to save some $$ and combine both motors during a build, using the crank from your current engine in the rebuild engine.

No I havent pulled it off yet.

I'm actually starting to think I should have just pulled my engine and rebuild that one. I dont NEED my truck to get to work. Its just a luxury, and nice to have a vehicle to drive. I feel like I might be out $260 now I guess I'll find a machine shop around town and see what they think.

No problem, man! My pleasure, and I hate to see people's rides stranded for too long if not necessary, ya know?

But; Seriously, man? ..... ANY machinist that's honest and fair will take a look, maybe even hone one hole out for ya just to see, for cheap.

As was said though.... the Crank? Hmmmmm.... if your crank journals are toast, .... bearing in there or not, you'll need a new one. If the Crank is ok, and yeah, the DOLT forgot or even worse, LEFT OUT the Rod Bearing....well, then might as well take the crank in to the guy as well. EITHER WAY, that motor needs a rebuild, or it's not got the allowable clearances, etc., for a rebuild......right?......And hey, Since this isn't a DD, you could do this spare time like in a jiffy, man. It's already torn down, ya know? Earn some of that money back and do WHATEVER you can by yourself, right?

Its kind of a DD. I mean, its my only vehicle. But its warm enough now that I can ride my bike the 4 miles to work, or a few of my coworkers live just down the road from me, so I could ride with them.

Took the #3 piston out. Why bother measuring rod bearing clearance when-

-theres that much room between them...

Uh..where are the bearings?

#1 combustion chamber

#2

#3

#4. Weird carbon deposits..

Thoughts on the crank?

Take the crank with ya, or leave it in even, have them take a look man. They might machine it down, balance it for ya and get your block ready in the mean time so you can slap one together, no? I would definitely have them take a look at that, Toyota. Then, when they're done, you'll know whether it's worth it or not, and if worth it, ....THEN you could gauge and then slap in new bearings, etc, ....right?

Are you trying to do this as cheap as possible? Just curious.....kind of getting that feeling here. That's totally understandable if that's the case.... But I'd still have a machinist look at the Crank/Block, ya know? Might as well take the head with ya too, right?

Alright, sooo I decided to adjust the ignition timing today. I couldnt find my timing light, so did it by ear. Retarded it some, adjusted idle speed. Now shes purring. Before she was sputtering, idling low, wouldnt accelerate worth a crap, rattled, knocked, smoked, could barely get above 3500 rpm.. Now shes back to being her high-revving, "fast" self. Still has low oil pressure, but damn she feels good again. she gets right up there and sounds awesome.

So still low oil pressure after driving for 30+ minutes. 10w-40 in her. And of course, still using tons of oil. But now I just dont know what to do.... She definitely still needs work. So maybe new head and front main seal?.... GUH! just dont know...
