That cherry red manifold was the bane of my existence for quite some time. An engine swap is what finally fixed mine haha. I hope you have found the solution for yours!

Thanks habanero... Well I thought I had it fixed and came back. It is getting in better shape but not to where I want it just yet.

Hello cyberhorn...I have had other suggest the clogged manifold as well. I will post picture below of a spare I had and was prepping to use it and it went wrong. Will be looking into ordering a new one soon.

Hello saskyrunner88... I seen a thread on Cherry Manifolds somewhere that you was having problems as well. I have a soft spot for the small block Ford but I will find this problem eventually. I would like to have a little 289 in one of my trucks.

The Cherry Manifold has come back, grrr... Not as quick and I am sort of wondering if I have it fixed and the manifold is just worn out. Cyberhorn and others I have talked to have mention the exhaust manifold or even worn. I am still going to check several other things and will get it fixed eventually. Once I find the guilty part, it is getting the 2 pound hammer to it so it can never give any one more problems.

A recap of what I have done so far. I did take it to Toyota and they did find a pin on the AFM where one of the pins was not making the best contact and said I had an EGR issue where it had a small leak. I have since replaced it. Was disappointed in Toyota for not finding the exact problem for me but I have fixed the issues they found and will do a few more and may take it back to them eventually.

I will say that asking around for Toyota mechanics, some I would not want to deal with. Probably good for swapping parts and common issues but I feel for someone that doesnt know mechanics. I did have a couple to say that I knew more on the 22r then they did and it would be over there head. Actually those would be the ones I would want to deal with. At least they were honest.

Luckily I have two other trucks to swap parts with, my 86 runner and 85 pickup but I do run test and have swapped parts to verify everything is good.

TPS.. Denso, New and had Toyota to set it to specs.
AFM...Tested and swapped.
O2 sensor.. Denso, New.
Water Temp Sensor.. Cleaned, Tested and Swapped.
EGR.. Cleaned, Tested.
No CEL.
Toyota put it on their equipment to run codes. The TE/E1 doesnt show all codes.

Things I am going to do.
Has a fresh tune up but am going to install new plugs later this week.
Test and install another Distributor.
Get a new Exhaust Manifold.
Test and replace Fuel Pressure Regulator.
Clean, test and install another set of Injectors.
Install a new Fuel Filter.
Go thru the Intake System and make sure it is cleaned.
Test and install another Cold Start Injector.

This is what I can think of for now. Any other suggestions? I have been checking other forums for ideas. Truck runs great but am even going to do a compression check.

I was going to clean and install this Exhaust Manifold but will just get a new on now. One reason I do not like to seperate the "Y" Pipe. Either the studs will snap or never stay tight in my experience.

Apparently I am not the only one that cuts the pipe and have it welded back up.

When you get a chance, can you give me a call. I want to bounce a few ideas off of you and see what you think I will be up all night and most of tomorrow.

I think I will try and weld some nuts onto the broken studs first and see if that will get them out. I got them soaking in rust dissolver again and hoping that will help free them up. Once I get the studs out I am going to soak it in the electrolysis tank. This manifold is in great condition and actually clean inside. I want to just make it look better. I got a new tube of that anti seize just for this stuff. I make sure I put it on my spark plugs as well.

I got another distributor ready to go in as well. I ran test on the pick up coil and it is right in the middle and set the air gap. I may get to swapping several parts on my days off. I am wanting to take a break from the 88 to clear my head and might start some body work on the Silver Bullet Runner.

I was looking at replacing the manifold on the 88 and dont see why this wouldnt work but will be looking into it. The 88 has two stud holes for the manifold.

My replacement has one hole. It is for an 88 or newer as the O2 sensor is blocked off on the manifold. 87 and older have the O2 in the manifold.

Looking at a junk motor I have for keeping parts on and comparison on, it is set up for both styles.

This has been an on going issue and the 88 doesnt get driven other then a mile to her job about once a week. Still getting the Cherry Manifold. I got a new manifold but am not holding my breath that this is it. No casting build up in it or anything. I am going to install this one but have a feeling that I will be doing the injectors on it as well. Am hoping this fixes it but not expecting it to. If this and new injectors dont fix it, I am going to stick in a whole new harness from an 85-87 in the runner. This is still my all time favorite truck and miss driving it.

Hello Cyberhorn... I tend to lose my catalytic converters. They are after the O2 sensor so the computer should not even know it is gone. When I suspect a converter of being bad, I just remove them. Im probably not the poster child for the Green people but I dont think coverters really do that much good.

I havent tried a compression test yet but I am going to try swapping injectors if this doesnt fix it (It wont, I am sure) and see if that says anything. The exhaust system is in great shape.

If you happen to be up at 2 or 3 am your time, give me a call. I will be up, want to bounce a few ideas off of you.

I took the exhaust off to replace the manifold. I really don t think this is going to fix my Cherry Manifold issue but it easier to do then swapping injectors which is next on the list. If that doesnt fix it, my poor 86 is giving up its parts to fix the 88. The 86 will be used as a parts truck for the 4th time in its life. I will keep the 86 and let one of the brats fix it up for themselves as I have a twin to Chefyotas red SR5 that he had and I am on an SR5 kick now.

I always have to cut the exhaust pipe when I pull the manifold. These tend to leak at the "Y" pipe and can be a real pain to get to seal back up. One view of what the exhaust looks like. A little black soot but for the mileage on this motor and how well it does run, I feel it is to be expected. It doesnt burn oil or anything but is does have 320k miles on it.

Manifold and "Y" pipe do not have any blockage.

Hard to see but all of the exhaust valves are clean, no build up on them from burning oil.

This is what my 86 looked like when it was new. This guys 86 is the blue berry color with the black top on it as my 86 was when going to the parts store to get some red locktite.

Here is the reason I get to cut my exhaust system each time I pull the exhaust manifold. I use red locktite, then the Impact wrench and then I stake the nut to the stud. It beats having an exhaust leak at the manifold and pipe. The only leak I have to worry about is the manifold to head leaks which isnt often.

Talked to Cyberhorn and Jason and they think I may be running rich and possibly causing the Cherry Manifold. The exhaust does have some soot in it and smelling it as it is running does have me wondering. I pulled the Cold Start Injector out and blocked it to see if it was leaking fuel while running for 30 minutes and not a drop.

Atleast I have a new area to start looking for on running rich. I always thought a Cherry Manifold was from running lean. Still no further then what I was but do have a new direction to go to from here anyways.

I pulled misty out of the shop and have Toms on the battery charger. I am going to go the trailer and take Toms to a body shop and the shop is to put a patch panel in for me. I tried to weld the exhaust system back up on Mistys and it is a poor job and I will have it welded up right. If I tried to weld the patch panel in, it would wind up being a quarter panel replacement when I got done. I know when to let someone with better skills do it then me. Maybe someday I will be able to do it myself but now isnt it.

Blocked CSI and no leaks. Was hoping this was it.

I have not been driving the 88 for awhile due to the cherry manifold. I am swapping injectors and if that doesnt fix it, not sure what else it could be. Every sensor, computer and now injector has been swapped. Still no high hopes of it from doing the cherry manifold. If this isnt it, it almost has to be something in the motor but cant see what it would be. It runs to good to have an issue. Seems like when it come out of closed loop is when it gets cherry.

Was working on Toms runner and got my pants and shirt soaked in sweat. I dont think sweat will make a good bonding agent for paint so decided to get an air conditioner unit in the shop. What a difference. So much nicer doing mechanic work when you are physically comfortable.

This past winter I took a vaction on the coldest week of the year and this stove made the shop a great place to hang out. I dont care for winter but actually enjoyed this past winter when I could be in doing something in the shop. Sure beat sitting in the house and packing on the weight. There are a million dollars worth of tools that I would like to have but these have been the best expense for the shop so far.
