Redete005 your rat story just saved me my lunch money. Erp.
Terry, you sure were busy yesterday. The dash looks good. I've never heard of Dyntron filler before. Is it good? Is that what you've been using on your body work? I have a gallon can of Rage Gold that is rusty from floating around during Hurricane Irene. The contents are still fine though.
PM sent.

Hello Nervo.. I havnet heard of Rage Gold. I do like Dynatron. It sets up as quick as Bondo but I feel is easier to work with. I do not like Bondo. To me it seems a little more difficult to work with. I have had great luck with Dyantron.
I have been busy. Really trying to get this truck running as quick as possible. Getting all of the missing pieces is a slow process. This being the second parts truck I have fixed, it just takes alot longer then I would like.

I got my dashpad installed. Unfortunately it all has to come back out. I have started to get it cleaned out. I will pull the seats and carpets out. Will leave the carpet out until I can get some new carpet in it. It was pieced together anyways and wasnt a good job at that. Still need to look at the fuse box wiring at it also. I will take the seats to the carwash and gve them a good cleaning.
I see people build motors and get the trucks painted and neglect the interior. Other then seats and head liner. An interior can be done cheap. If you are worried about using interior paint, I suggest get a junk piece from the boneyard. If you can get the color panel you already have just put on a light coat of Adhesion and a minute later put on 2 coats of paint. If different color of panel, it could take 4 coats.
My bondo job is far better then what it was and alot less noticeable. I have tried the vinyl repair kits and never had any luck with them.

I have been busier then just on the 85 truck. I bought an 84 to fix and sell and then seen it was to bad to sell as a driver, I wont sell a dangerous truck. My brother really likes the stepsides. I orginally sold him the 84 and told him I would swap frames on it as it is bad. Then I got the title for the 85 extended cab and wanted it instead of the 88. I traded him the 88 pick up back for the 84 as I need the motor and wont have time to do a frame swap for a little while anyways. Further inspection show the cab is really bad and as bad as I hate parting a truck, I started parting this one.
He sold me his bass boat and a hot tub for a fair price and I sold him the 88 for a fair price. He wants me to fix the 88 up alot nicer then I would of for my self as I was just going for a nice clean stock look with my Downey bed. He will be getting the bed off of the 84 and I will be doing the Downy truck at a later time. I have nearly everything to get the downey truck built complete but it is on the back burner. I want to get my Runner finished more then anything but I need a truck worse at this time.
Back to my brother truck the 88, I will be doing the restore on it and he provides the parts. He has paid for it and has given me another $500 to start on buying what I need to do to it. Alot of that will be going to paint and getting the rest to the way he wants it. I had a tough time getting the bed bolts broke off as my impact gun was acting up but is workign great now. Just as soon as I get the bed ready for paint it will be getting done.
The 84 will be fixing two trucks, mine and his. You can see the frame in the background that I will use for the Downey truck at a later time, my runner comes before it. Since I have gotten over my tooth epsiode and the wife and kids go back to school soon, I should make some fast progress. I got plenty to keep me busy and it is funner spending someone elses money.
Bed that will go on the 88. Left of tire, you can see some plating.
Started stripping. Frame and cab will be all that goes to waste. You might abe able to see where I am drilling the spot welds off of the core support for my runner as it was rusted really bad but was all I had at the time. Motor for my truck, runs GREAT. Downey frame in back ground.
Some of the cab rust. Some!!
Frame rot and has been plated several times, even the front end is rotted.

Truck is further stripped then what is showing. Should be pulling motor tomorrow and getting it cleaned up and hopefully in my truck soon. It runs great but leaks like a sieve.

I have a U joint going out on Mistys runner so I thought I would grab a spare shaft and replace the U joints in it. This is a first for me. They welded the U joint in. I was wanting to just change them out and put the shaft in later today or tomorrow. The jury rigging never ceases to amaze me. It isnt much more difficult to do it right. Got some wires to straighten out in the fusebox area.
Also on the 85 they cut speaker holes in the door panels and in the back area. I am sure the panels for the back are going to be difficult to find. May need to put speakers back in there. I just like mine out of sight. Maybe I can come up with something like a speaker cover that will looks like it belongs in there. Will just need to get creative.
Welded...Grr

well at the very least they didnt full weld the cups in terry, a grinder should with a bit of careful work free things up an leave a clean paint able surface
found out today while looking at mine didnt do much other than look my front shocks work but the shaft covers are crumbling away rusted worse than anything ive seen in years of working on cars

Hello Cyberhorn...I have seen some bad ones myself. Alot of people nowadays just are mechanically inclined like they used to be and some of the newer cars, I am starting to get into that catagory. Definitely on front wheel drive. I have no desire to work on them.

I was reding Chefs thread and forgot that I had done this on my 86 Runner. Will do it on the front diff as well and run it up to the fire wall. I have some "stickys" on how I do things on my projects and keep them listed on the first post of this build. A while back I found several Youtube videos and posted them thru out the build where they applied. Need to go back and add more info that I have found.
Diff Breather Extention.
22re Plenum fitting, 3/8th fuel line and the axle vent. I did use hose clamps but posted the pic to get the idea across. I ran it up to my gas tank which is higher then any water I will ever go thru. I have seen it ran up the rear tail light like habs link shows. Also it should work for the front diff and will eventually run mine up the fire wall or something similar.

YEP, YOU DID, ....thanks! lol.... I don't have an extra plenum port... but I GOTZ IDEARS! hahaha. Lots of links are popping up too. 4crawler put the breather end in (the rear, brake/rev./running light housing), too. Not a bad idea, really.... Neither is the Gas Tank!
The main thing I wanted to check is that mine is breathing fine, too... And I am TICKED at myself for forgetting to do that when I installed the 4.30's and locker... Not a big deal, easy to check/pull(at least on a rust free rig, right? ...I know, I know, we're spoiled! haha)...

Hello Mark... I am pizzed at myself for not putting valve seals in her truck when I had it apart. Had the cam out. Would of only taken a few moments to do. It just slipped my mind. Good news on that is it isnt smoking lately anymore. I think the heat was just making the oil so thin that it got past the seals. Been running like a champ. It was HOT on the days it did act up. I can understand for getting your breathing system. We arent perfect. But I would feel better if I could kick my butt up to my shoulders for missing that step. Was just to excited to get it running.

Did have the boys helping remove the clutch off of the 84 motor. Anytime I run the air tools they are there in a heart beat, then I conned them into helping me clean the shop afterwards. Got the 84 stripped. It isnt safe for highway use and it will be getting another chance as it will be come an offroad rig. The cab, frame and axles are solid enough for that and is getting a new home.

I have gotten alot done but now am taking a few moments to get caught up on some of my progress and think of the situation I am in.
I was thinking the 84 motor could be made fuel injected like it should be. It might could be, but now I noticed right away that it doesnt have a place for a knock sensor. I wont make a contraption out of it, I will do it right. So know I am looking into doing a full rebuild off of the lower end of the motor that is in the 85 truck or doing a full rebuild on a motor that I dont know anything about as it came from a guy parting the truck. I dont know how each motor is. The 84 runs like a champ, just is dirtier than any pig with all of the oil build up.
Some of the differences I have learned and have some on other threads that I will move to here. Pics of differences will explain alot to others that may be unaware. I was thinking 83 was the change in 22rs. Valve covers are interchaneable, but timing covers are not are some of the other things I know.
Differences in motors. Below is the 84.
Round exhaust ports.
No place for the Knock sensor. The oil sensor ( probably not right as this motor had some poor workman ship on it)on this motor is in a vein that runs the lenght of the block. A knock sensor has bigger threads and sits about one inch higher. You can see the round flat spot that could probably be machined for knock sensor.
85 motor
Pear shaped exhaust ports.
Knock sensor has a larger thread and sits higher then the small oil sensor thread.
Thread sizes are different.

The front motor is a greasy mess but runs like a champ. The back motor I have no idea about it as I got it from a parted truck, but will start doing a rebuild on it. Was going to do it this winter as I wanted to get my 85 running as soon as possible. Grr.. Oh well, gripping wont get it fixed, but I really thought I could have it moving under its own power this weekend, not now .

Glad to hear it stopped pluming smoke.... Look at it this way.... You can keep adding oil if it's an Oil Succubus! hahaha... and it will keep running and running whether the seals leak or not.... probably another 50K or more..... LOTS of motors you can NOT say that about. They start using oil(like a Nissan I had) and it's GULP-GULP-GONEEEEEE, in no time! haha. BUT< yes, ... alas, it's best to do it right the first time. That's why I take longer in some things(Some things I just take longer cuz I HAVE NO FREAKIN TIME!) hahaha... But STILL we all make 'slips' like that, buddy You're a solid, thorough 'ECONO-RESTO' MAN! You'd be the FIRST guy I come to when trying to restore a CL find!
WOW, regarding the Knocks.... SUCKS! You'll figure it out, man... I was worried about that, Terry... Exhaust, deck height, etc. But again, YOU'RE ON IT, so it's as good as DIGGITY-GIGGITY-DONE! hahaha.
Lastly... Terry, I can't BEGIN to tell you how great it is to see those midgets out there helpin! People really underestimate those kinda 'inclusions' in the 'process of being a 'mans-man'! It's IMPORTANT, and while you can't just up and raise em.... That stuff WILL likely make a difference in their(as I remember you saying) pretty tough lives! Even when kids are in volatile situations in family life, etc., ... LOOK HOW QUICK THEY RUN TO ..... '''''build'''' something! Ya know? I LOVE this age of innovation, etc., etc., ... but I've SEEN IT, with my own eyes, my own kids, etc., ... it just SUCKS the hands on creativity and drive to 'BUILD SOMETHING' OR 'MAKE SOMETHING' OR 'GO SEE THIS THING WAY DOWN THE ROAD' kinda things..... RIGHT OUT OF MANY of them! My girls? I WOULD NOT buy them a smart phone... They bought their own finally when already graduated, etc. THEY APPRECIATE THEM MORE! Funny, too... when all they had was a generic phone or DAD? They chose "Dad, let's DO something!".... to which my OBVIOUS answer was? >>>> "LIKE WHAT?" .... Pfffffffst, MAKE THEM THINK, MAN! hahahaha.
Sure hope things are well, Terry! How's the tooth? Best wishes and prayer for QUICK AND CONTINUED healing!!!! NO HICCUPS WITH THAT! Be careful, ya hear? lol

PS> I KNOW, it's not preferable or possibly even workable... But could you possibly use a thread adapter to slap one of the Knocks in? I would think it might interfere with 'resonating' sound/vibration... but maybe not? I GUESS it would not hear as much and adjust the timing to a possible dangerous level? Just throwing it out there... HAS to be a way to make it fit... JUST NOT SURE IF IT WOULD THEN WORK! lol.

Hmmm, I swear I've heard of people mounting the knock sensor to the motor mount and not having any problems, ha, ha, never tried it tho, lol.

the knock sensor is just a sound transducer a microphone tuned to hear a certain sound type long as it has solid metal which transfers sound nearly as well as water far better than air it will work
sorry to hear the 22r engine wont work terry
