TacoTacoma96's '88 4Runner Build-up
Well Here's the back story to this one. Well a friend at school was selling his '88 4Runner and we came to an agreement. The reason he was selling this was because he blew up the 22re that was in it. Which was also a stroker motor. The deal is if he gets me another stroker 22re I'll give him $1500. If he dosn't I'll walk away with it for $1000. pretty good considering the mods already done:
The original shot of it
The blown up 22re, nice paint though
Misc. Pics
Like I said, this ain't gonna be a show truck but something to have fun in.
Currently waiting on the word if he can get the stroker motor or not. In the mean time I'm gonna try and sell my '94 pickup. Cant Wait
- Softopper And The Hardtop
- Rear Locker
- High Steer Kit
- Heavy Duty Clutch
- 4.11 Gears
- 2in Suspension Lift
- Seats out of an '01 Tacoma
- 5 15x10 Steelies with 31/10.50-15 Goodyear Duratracs
- Swapped out gauges with Tachometer.
- Winch Mount (No Winch Yet)

Well got word that the stroker motor was a no go. But I formulated a plan. I'm gonna buy a used motor from a guy my friend knows, and swap out the head from the stroker motor onto it. Them were gonna stick it back in and make it run. Also thought about a dual-row timing chain. are they worth the extra dough?

haven't done any research on it. Just know there is a double one, and you need a different oil pump gear. .. But.. If you can get a beefier higher flow pump, or even if it just makes you feel better about pulling out in front a big rig at the interstate on ramp. Go for it. The single row chain lasts justfien with some self reservation

Went on a road trip yesterday and picked this bad boy up:
It's got about 109,000 mile on it which isnt that bad for $850.
Today was even more productive. we got the motor to school and proceeded to dismantle it:
Cleaned some grease and found this:
Decided not to use the stroker head because I'm scared its warped. so I'm sending the one already on the motor and the flywheel to be machined and turned.
Won't get them back till next friday. The pistons are going to be cleaned and the block is going to be painted. Don't know the color yet:
Got a list of new things:

Got a list of new things:
- Water Pump
- All new Gaskets
- Castrol Edge oil with Lucas Additive
- Gonna swap the timing chain for one with metal Guides

Well today we removed the timing cover and chain:
We found a broken chain guide which is pretty common from what I've heard.
We took off the water pump and oil pump. The oil pump looked decent while the water pump didnt:
Already got a new water pump and we aren't going to reuse that cover. We also checked all the crankshaft bolts and rod bearing bolts.
We also used some Engine Brite to get rid of all the grease and noticed the oil pan has seen better days
The rest of the motor turned out good.
I plan on painting the motor red with a black valve cover with a red stripe. Hopefully we'll get that stroker this week so I can start swapping parts.

Picked these up yesterday
Good thing I did because the head was warped a little bit. Everything's good now though. Finally got set for Tuesday to tow the 4Runner to the school and get to work stripping the other motor

So It Begins.....
Well we finally got the 4Runner there and started working on it.
Please note the hole on the block. I don't think it can be saved.
First mod was to get rid of those cheap seat covers.
The seats actually look alright. Once we got that far we had to clean up the shop so we didn't get to pull the motor today. But we'll thrash on it tomorrow. Also here's the exhaust, I plan on running a Aero Muffler on it with full piping.
Still deciding on a tube bumper or just reuse the winch mount.
So she sits till tomorrow.

I think that the original engine that came in the truck was the blown stroker 22re that he robbed the head off of.
Reading this thread is really making me anxious to get cracking on an engine for mine.

Just like Gizler00 said, it was in the truck when I bought it. If I remember right it was from a company in Colorado. He said he didnt drive it but 7,000mi before it blew, he said he was like. He always drove balls to the wall though, that more than likely had something to do with it to.

Looks great. I didn't realize till we started painting the valve cover that we got metallic paint. But still turned out great. Also the paint I bought said "Ford Red". Favors Chevy Orange to me.

[QUOTE=tacotacoma96;52050269]Can't wait to see what you do to yours. I also decided not to use the stroker head because I was scared of it being warped. So I just sent the other head off to be machined. I'll just put the other one on the shelf for now
I cant wait either. I have a line on a rebuild 22re that needs to be assembled, (been making payments on it) But when I finish paying it off, its going in the Runner.
I also need to redo the Suspension and steering. Still has Push and Pull setup.
Have just been busy collecting all the necessary parts
Keep up the Good Work

Can you guess whats missing
Finally took out the motor and it was pretty bad as shown here.
This is what came out of the oil pan
But we managed to put the metal guides in.
But next week is spring break so not going back to school Till Monday.
But I'm planning to fix these with some kind of sheet metal.
Can't wait
