Here's a bit of a repost of what I put on Chef's thread:

I just got all the parts (I hope) to get a CB running.

I'm not going for maximum range, I'm just looking to talk to other wheelers within the parks I go to, so I'm not worrying too much about the rules of mounting the antenna.

I'm planning to do this mount setup:

I ordered this radio because it was cheap with great reviews. If I need more later, or if this one craps out from the elements, I'll invest in a nicer one.

Amazon.com: Uniden 40-Channel CB Radio (PRO505XL): Car Electronics Amazon.com: Uniden 40-Channel CB Radio (PRO505XL): Car Electronics

I got this antenna because it is supposed to be flexible for hitting stuff offroad, but it's not a super long wire wip that could hit spotters:

Amazon.com: K40 SF-300 Black 3' 1000W Superflex Tunable Fiberglass CB Whip Antenna: Automotive Amazon.com: K40 SF-300 Black 3' 1000W Superflex Tunable Fiberglass CB Whip Antenna: Automotive

And I got this mount:

Amazon.com : Firestik SS274 Adjustable Stainless Steel Hood - Trunk Channel Antenna Mount : Firestik Side Mount : Electronics Amazon.com : Firestik SS274 Adjustable Stainless Steel Hood - Trunk Channel Antenna Mount : Firestik Side Mount : Electronics

I also ordered a Pyle loud speaker for the PA function on the CB because it was only $9 and seems like it could be a lot of fun.

I don't have the mount and the truck in the same place right now, but that's the plan so far.

Once I get it all bolted up and tight maybe I'll hit it with some black paint.

Well, I've been pretty tired of hanging up on my stock crossmember for a while now. You can see it's been taking a beating. To get it back on after taking this photo I had to slot the holes and hammer the mounts on the frame, it had deformed so much:

So I just ordered a Budbuilt plate crossmember, powder coated black! I guess it will be about 3 weeks before it comes in.

I prefer cobra cb radio. i have one with a SWB meter on it. the key to a good cb is having a tune correctly. the budbuilt x members are super nice. i have one and will never go back to the old ugly stock one lol

Yeah, I just got the Uniden hooked up and it doesn't have the built in SWB, so I'm tune-less for now.

I had a decent night though... I got the antenna mounted (had to modify the mount), ran the wire proper, installed the PA speaker and ran its wire proper, and got the CB installed and powered.

I haven't found a good spot for my fire extinguisher yet. That's the only thing that was on my list tonight that didn't get done.

Here are some shots of how I got the CB antenna mounted. I'm pretty happy with how clean I was able to make it by coming out of the tail light pocket.

Thanks Mark!

It was a pretty tame day. The groups I fell in with were still learning their vehicles so we stayed on level 3. This is pretty much the only video I got. Nothing crazy at all, but this is the top of a pretty tall/steep climb, and I chose the tallest part of the ledge. No problem! I'm really happy with my truck right now.

Yeah Mark! I was reading through your post about why you want a CB:

This past weekend was my first time wheeling with a CB, and WOW... it was great to have! Just like you said, everyone could chat between vehicles while on the trail, giving warnings or asking questions. It really feels like a must-have if you're going on organized trips or to an off road park.

I tried my PA speaker but the group couldn't hear me up at the top of the climb I was at the bottom of. I didn't have the volume maxed, and I'm pretty timid on a microphone... but I may also have to rethink my speaker placement. (Under the hood, right next to the brake booster.)

When I decided I wanted a truck, part of my justification was that I could use it to carry my mountain bike. I got kind of distracted by the truck, but a year later I'm finally using it for its originally intended purpose!

I also FINALLY got my ammo box with lock mounted in place of the center console so I'll have a place to lock up my wallet and phone while I'm riding my bike on the trails. I'll get some pics of it tomorrow.

The bed liner paint is flaking off of the chrome windshield trim real bad. I picked up some black Plastidip, so I'm going to try sanding the rest of the bed liner off of the trim and see how the Plastidip does.

That is OK, economy of words on a radio is considered good form.

Very true. I just want to make sure my PA speaker is loud enough in case I need to use it in an emergency.

Here are a couple photos of the ammo box. I know this isn't a new idea, but I'm happy to have finally done it. I WILL miss having a cooler between the front seats, but this is more useful. It gives me a place to put my winch controller, CB mic, and other valuables when my top is off.

Smile

I have found that the best use for a PA is listening to the CB while out of the vehicle. If you need to evacuate a comunity they also can be handy.

My buddy Jason just posted a couple more videos he took from my trip to Hidden Falls last month. This was my first time on this trail. it's a very long creek bed. A lot of fun! I didn't have my CB yet so this is the first time I got to hear all the tips they were giving out along the way.

Jason's son really makes these videos fun to. He says some really cute things while riding.
