G282 is 4.3 axles (good, better than the normal 4.1 axles), open diffs
GR11 is the trim code - i assume grey interior, sr5 trim (same trim code i have on both of my 87s). i cannot locate the exact terminology for this yet. probably indicates cloth seats (gr) and color of trim (11 - gray).

look like skunk tracks to me, there are squirrel tracks across the top of the photo going "east/west".

oh, thanks! Yes 4.3 gear came with automatic transmission according to options list i saw, so that makes sense. The interior is gray. The truck had chrome wheel well trim in an older photo, pre “bodywork”.

At first I thought they were fox tracks, but after some online research I think they are bobcat(not that likely) or large house cat(I know a couple suspects in the neighborhood).

Yesterday I got a chance to look over the truck in daylight, not raining, not still under recent snow. I think I will do a walk around video for it asap.

And my son and I had a chat to define the immediate future of this vehicle. It’s going to be his summer truck. When I asked what he thought it should become, i heard three things:
Adventure truck
Overland
Survive Zombie apocalypse

So to me that means mechanical resto, not much attention to bodywork, maybe a rear locker and better tires, overall de scumming, possibly soft top. But that white hood has got to go.

And Wallytoo, we’ll be able to take you up on your offer to show us some trails this summer!

Giant Goo Bomb

Tonight I took some time to crawl under the truck with a flashlight and take a good look at the frame…what I can see of it anyway.
This thing is covered with “the oil of Aphrodite and the dust of the grand Wazoo”. For at least the last seven years, the owner had the underside annually coated with used motor oil. It sure seems to have worked. But I don’t even want to touch it without a full wetsuit on. I think I will try to take it to a commercial truck wash for an underside blast.

Holy black goo....everything but the exhaust is coated...but yeah probably did you a favor there and preserved the frame.

Better than fluid film to prevent rust.

Restored 80s 4Runners are all the rage right now. you could throw 20-25k into this and still get ahead if you sell it. I see 4Runners like this on Bringatrailer.com getting auctioned off for wild prices.
Then again you could just keep it..

Cant wait to see how it comes out!

My son referred to our white ‘86 as a “show piece” the other day, so this one will not get that level of restoration(yet, anyway!)
Keep watching!

Yours is the “Flea Runner”; this one is the “Goo Runner”.

Wife and Cat discussing how gross this truck is.

My goal was to get the engine diagnosed this weekend and I didn’t quite get there. First I went and bought a 1gallon garden sprayer from Home depot to be able to hit the whole engine compartment with Purple Power. I also had to take a paint brush and scrub a lot of the oil off. Then I rinsed using very hot water. Now at least you can touch things under the hood without getting dirty, but if I do wind up pulling the engine I’ll clean it much better than this.

I hear a “clunking” which I believe is a rod bearing, and a “whacking” noise which Sounds like valve train. I did not go so far as to pull the valve cover yet. There is also a squeaking noise which is belt noise because I had just degreased the engine. Pulling plug wires one by one was inconclusive.

*Both sounds get worse with RPM.
*Oil pressure looks great on the gauge
*Engine idles smoothly, no smoke, no smell of antifreeze
*New head and timing chain was installed in 2021

what do you think?

mel/tom is on BaT, too (as am i) and the prices have softened a bit in the BaT 1st gen market. the recent sr5s hammered for less than $20K, and they were in pretty decent shape. spending $25K to hope to make a few bucks might not be a good idea at this point.

We started from the back and removed the plywood floor, and gross carpet that was glued down. Then we brushed and vacuumed our way toward the front.

Agree Wally, I thought that last one would break $20k at least.

My son pulled the seats out and we found a diverse array of things under them and the console:
*a jackknife
*a bottle of Listerine
*Immodium tablets
*some other prescription ointment
*$15 in change

Seats are grimy, but I think they will clean up. Foam need help. May expand again with steam infusion. Previous owner “fixed” many things with Gorilla tape.

Anybody got matching seat covers for sale?

Everyone knows the best way to “fix” your console is with Gorilla tape!

I’m pretty sure I can fix this.(without tape)
