Stripes look great, bumper does also. Pretty soon you won't be able to call this the goo Runner any more.

Just fueled up the GooRunner and checked gas mileage. Last tank was mostly highway. 179 miles/9.17 gallons = 19.5 mpg. A new personal best for this rig with automatic trans. 👍🏻

Just fueled up after the weekend 228 miles, lots of it highways between Boston and CT.
10.5 gallons = new personal best of 21.7 mpg. Pretty satisfied with that!

At this rate you'll be at 30mpg soon. I think I got maybe 21 mpg once on a road trip.

Cruising Between 65 and 70mph

I had a thought about trying to turn off 1 injector at sustained highway speed. I know GM did this with some v8’s in the late 80’s but don’t know if any mfgr is still using such a scheme.

Anybody think it would improve mpg?

it would be difficult to turn one off, as they are all wired together to fire at the same time. that, and i doubt you'd see better mileage running on three cylinders. better mileage can be attained with an engine rebuild.

my 2nd '87, which now has 275+k miles, had a complete engine rebuild at 244k miles. with the 5-speed, i consistently return 22 to 24 mpg during the summer, with highway speeds of only 65 to 70, and secondary roads at 50 to 55. if i drove an entire tank on secondary roads, cruising at 45 to 55, i would expect to hit 25 to 26 mpg. my last tank (filled up yesterday) sat at 22.4 mpg.

my 1st '87, which sits at 227k miles, has an untouched engine (other than basic stuff and a head gasket). during the summer, at best i return 22 mpg, and more often hit 20 to 21. winter is 17 to 18. same transmissions and gearing in both. the difference is the rebuilt 22re is tight and has slightly more power (pistons are one size larger) and the valvetrain is new, etc.
