yeah, pull the transmission and transfer case together. much easier to deal with that way.
now i’m thinking i’ll replace my bouncy speedo cable at the same time…clean and paint rear driveshaft, pull the rear pumpkin and set backlash…this is how my projects drag on…June Father’s day car show in York Beach will be my firm deadline. 👍🏻

I need to do the speed O cable too. It squeals in cold weather besides shaking. I got one on ebay , it's custom made but they forgot to put the grommet on first. I'm not sure about getting a grommet on it now it needed to be on before the ends. I contacted the seller and he was like " We couldn't get a grommet" (because it's part of the OEM cable) and he suggested using the old one, lol. It's toast now. Such a let down though.
I wasn’t entirely happy with the original steering box I had rebuilt. It still had too much play on the input side. I didn’t have the tools to take that section apart. So now I have swapped back in the now rebuilt, supposedly-low-mileage, supposedly-trail-gear box that I bought off a squirrely little dirtbag in a McD’s parking lot. Of course, whatever i take apart I wind up cleaning and painting so that slows me down. (Hey, i did say “restomod” from the beginning).
it helps to move the air box out of the way when swapping a steering box, it’s just a few bolts. But then i realized it could use some detailing. Before After
i wasn’t sure about painting the AFM but it looks better now.
After I got it all back together i refilled and bled the system and washed the truck and took a cruise around town to make sure all was well.
It was…until I had to make the full-lock right turn into my own driveway and realized I didn't have full lock. I guess I had the box off from centered by one full revolution when I mounted it. So i popped the pitman arm back off, turned left one full revolution and socked it back down. Then pulled the steering wheel 4 times to get it centered back up(it was off before this by a tooth or two. I think we are good now but will confirm on a highway run up to Rockport tonight.
Still totally recommend rebuilding your own steering box for anyone who wants to try it.

i just googled and saw one at Yotashop today. I think it was right for 86 22re…
it said it is good for 84 to 89 4runner and pick up. the picture shows the grommet so I ordered just now.
The cable arrived today there's more to it than just the grommet too. There is a mount that clips to the under side of the body plus a couple pieces of rubber to protect the cable against rubbing on the body.

The part number I bought is 89147, but claims to be correct for 1984-1989 4runner and pickup, 22r and 22re OEM. Maybe Wally’s higher part number supersedes it. I trust Yotashop so it’s probably fine.
Big day for the ol’ 4runner with a 200+ mile road trip up the coast. We started up I-95 to Salisbury Beach, then into Hampton Beach NH.
My son’s friend was there so we picked her up and went to see these fantastic kites at the state beach.
Then we grabbed a coffee and burned it for home on the interstate. I checked gas mileage for the last 120 miles, mostly highway 65-70 average and it was pretty good…21.6 mpg.
