Ironically, no problem with that bolt. I just used vice grips on it after the intake plenum was removed. That one will be getting anti-seized when it goes back in.

Well it kills me when i can’t fix something and today that something is my 16 year old propane torpedo heater that i use in the garage. It’s the kind where the fan and igniter run constantly but the igniter just stopped clicking and that was it. Today i took it apart and maybe if i could get the ignitor module i could fix it, but my search seems fruitless so i’ll just buy a new one and hope to find one for parts at a swap meet some day. Spent way too much time at Home Depot and Lowe’s trying to explain to them what a torpedo heater was. No stock anywhere, had to purchase a new one from Tractor Supply online and go get it in New Hampshire in the morning.
Happy New Year!
RIP, Century heater. Es muerto.

Its like running out of welding wire when getting ready to start a big job then getting the wire and running out of gas. No I never buy both at the same time or place for that matter. I'm not that good. Then get going again and I'm out of cut off wheels for the dremil. Fun fun.

I was able to rectify my lack of heat problem with a new propane heater from Tractor Supply. Just over the state line in NH, they have the good sense to keep these in stock IN THE DEAD OF WINTER, unlike stupid Massachusetts.
The new hotness.
it works exactly like the old one and cost $100.

On and off i have been working on the temporary engine, cleaning up and painting parts. I had to wait for the engine paint from ebay that i ordered between the holidays. First the boy and i sprayed it down with purple power and hosed it off. But that didn’t get it all so i cleaned a lot of oil and dirt buildup off the block and head with Brakleen and a brass brush. On the exhaust manifold i used cast iron stove polish and a small paintbrush. Looks a lot better than the red rust color to me. And i decided to paint the block with Pontiac metallic blue. I don’t like black engines and think the blue will look good with a black krinkle valve cover which i haven’t gotten to yet.

I had a front and rear main seal so i thought i’ll throw those in while it’s easy to do.
Awesome paint.
Instead of prying it out, deform it with a hammer and screwdriver
Tap evenly around until seated all the way.
Leave it.
After looking closely at the rear main, i believe the oil/crud buildup between the oil pan and flywheel plate was due to the oil pan gasket leaking so i decided to leave the seal as-is.
I also decided to put off the engine swap until about late March since we are heading into the dead of winter and if i pull the engine and then push the truck out if the one car garage, i am going to have great difficulty getting it back in the garage if there is snow/ice in my driveway.

Today’s goal- get rid of red valve cover!
i have a can of VHT black krinkle paint that i’ve been holding on to for about 10 years so i wasn’t sure how it would work. I watched a few videos on krinkle paint and it seems people get mixed results.
i took my time wiping down the cover with lacquer thinner, sanding it with 220, and wiping it down again.
Scuffed up. Yellow 3M masking tape is expensive but awesome.
Here’s the after shot. So much better.
At first there was no krinkle effect. Then i applied the heat gun and drying set it off. Subtle but i am pleased with it.

nice clean-up and paintwork.
the front main comes out easily by prying it out. no danger of scratching anything that seals, either, because the crank pulley has to be removed prior to the seal coming out, and the machined/polished surface of the crank pulley is what the front seal mates to, not on the crankshaft.

The wife needed to get out of the house today so i came up with an adventure that took us to Rockport and Gloucester, Mass.
The red shack is the famous “Motif #1”.
That house was once owned by the King of Thailand.
At the beach in Gloucester.
He can’t wait for St. Patrick’s day.

The truck ran great except for a minor front end vibration on the Interstate. I thought the tires had flat-spotted from being parked so long.
then i realized i had locked the hubs weeks ago due to ice in my own driveway. Duh!

When we were first checking this out on google Maps my son remembered this location from Bewitched of all shows. They filmed on location there but made a copy of the Fishermens Memorial on the other base that is a little further down the road. I Was like this can't be the place we are going.
oh yeah it was a real fun place to drive with a box truck that I wasn't familiar with and a auto transport. Tight streets. The mirrors were excellent though! Then because of that split road I had to drive the 4runner around the block to get to the trailer ( not registered) just after a cop drove by. The PO was acting as a look out.

The episodes before that one and Daren on a pedistol starts in Salem. They must have spent a few weeks in the area. I'm watching it now on Crackle!
