Yeah, I use the same etching primer on any bare metal, prior to paint. That stuff works great!
Here are some pics of my progress on the rear third, so far...
The third is being rebuilt today. Hopefully all goes well and it will be reinstalled tomorrow.
In other news, I spoke to a very nice man named Bud this morning. He asked me for my name, address, and some sort of payment. In return he promised to send something nice to my house. Here's a hint...

Well, the third isn't finished yet. Instead of sitting around waiting impatiently, I decided to get some overdue tidbits taken care of. I was reading the forum, and saw a thread about brake upgrades, that reminded me of a part in my garage. I have a 1" MC and dual diaphragm booster that are collecting dust. So, I went ahead and installed them.
The old rust magnet..
My new friend..
I took out the useless cruise control while I was in there..
Side by side..
And installed..
I'll still need to flush the system when I get the rear end back together. Hopefully this will compliment the big piston calipers nicely.
Also, I had a ridiculous clunk/rattle in my drivers door that has been overlooked far too long. I removed the door panel, expecting to find a loose regulator or something. Instead, in the bottom of the door was this..
..Craftsman 1/2" ratchet. I guess a former owner left it there. Makes me wonder what they needed it for on the door?? Anyhow, I told my buddy the story, and he thinks this is the reason there were so many loose nuts and bolts on this rig when I first got it...
Anyhow, I felt extremely lazy, since I've had this 4Runner over a year now, and never got that thing out of my door.

Thanks guys. Funny, 'cause I was just thinking about buying a new 1/2" ratchet for the tool collection. I'm going to soak it with some PB to loosen things up a bit. If all else fails, I guess I'll just take it to Sears for a replacement.

I got word tonight that my third is back together. New bearings installed, but the gears were fine, whew. I love when things go well, and the wife will be happy about the extra cash in the bank. I work tomorrow, so I'll pick up the third Saturday. I'll put it back in the 4Runner my next day off, which wont be 'til Monday or Tuesday. Turns out the preload was set too tight, causing the front pinion bearing to fail. I don't know who's to blame, since it was already in the truck when I bought it. I'm just glad it's fixed, and it should be good to go for some time. I should have the cross member about the same time, so I'll be adding some new pics soon! I'll also get a shot of the scarring on the ARB housing for all to see.

I just finished reading your build from start to finish, very nice 4runner you have & I love what you have done with it. I have alot of the same ideas for mine, but it is going to take some time. Really like the gas tank lift and glad to hear that you plan on keeping the IFS & go the LT route over an SAS. Keep up the good work.
